What is the theoretical top speed at WOT with the tallest Prop available from mercury, and the tallest gears available? Assuming there was a hull that would allow the motor to achieve that?

I don't understand this engine. Why the big gearcase with 2.33 gears? Wouldn't the smaller gearcase with the taller gears be the better choice for speed?

The formula race 60 is the race engine, they are similar but alot different. The new 60r is marketed as a small flats boats engine that is very popular nowadays. They needed to fill that hp range with an "R" motor. There are no other 15" mid motors in this hp range in the market merc is trying to get in on it. The difference between this engine and the Formula race is:The new 60r is 20lbs heavier, ( likley due to gearcase) The 60r has a 2:33 gear box and is huge at 4.25" formula race has a 1:83 at 3 3/4"
, the formula race has solid motor mounts the 60r does not, the formula race has wing plate mounts on the mid and comes with wing plates, this 60r does not. Both have 6300 limiter and likley tuned the same so its a step up from fishing motor. Fishing motor makes just over 60hp at 5800 rpm, the formula race and presumably 60r make closer to 70 at 6300. 60 r can have up to 5 year warranty, formula race, no warranty. i like this idea, im hoping it helps push other manufactures for make small race style engines again, Etec 60 should come with 15" mid and a small race gear ratio lower unit! hopefully this puts the competition out there. I must add these engines are extremly reliable given they are actually made in china, at least they were, they may have switched with this new 60, but I have seen this powerhead with over 10,000 hours on it... yes thats alot.

Bigger gear case acts as a planing surface combined with bigger props for much quicker hole shot than the smaller gear case on the Formula 60. Add in the higher rev limit and 2.33 ratio and it is an animal out of the hole, especially in shallow water conditions where it is being marketed (flat skiffs).

The formula race has the same 6,300 limiter, not sure why it says 6,000 on their website.

They are different programs, 6000 is the soft limiter on the formula race, the 60R has a soft limit at 6300 and a hard limit at 6500.

I'm not totally sure what's with the "Race" branding on the motor. Maybe just because of the Formula Race 60? I'm not sure why they didn't just call it a Pro XS, bring it out in a 20" and a 15". I would bet on it that a 20" is coming shortly, as I'm sure this motor's true intention is to compete with the Yamaha & Suzuki 70hp, as well as the Evinrude 60HO, on fishing rigs.
