HTH does an ordinary guy ship a long block to a rebuilder?

So I went to upsfreight.com. There, I learned that they ship freight. They also provided zero links as to where or how to get started. So I called their toll free shipping phone number. Got a lady on the phone who quoted me $798 to ship a 60lb carb two stroke Yamaha 40hp long block. 90 lbs with my way over built crate. Obviously that is not even on the same planet as reality. Either the lady who quoted me didn’t understand what I wanted, or she didn’t know what she was doing.

Anyway, this can’t be real. How would I ship my 2.0l power head only, if I need it rebuilt? ?!?!?! How do you guys do it?

Regular UPS Ground, drop off at a UPS store if you don't have pickup service. https://www.ups.com/ship/guided/orig...8483&loc=en_US

Bolt the starter bracket onto the block or support/block the mount from impact somehow.

("Freight" means they come to you with a semi truck and deliver to the rebuilder by semi truck... usually pallets of "whatever" or a complete outboard motor in a crate.)

But... doesn’t that mean they won’t keep it upright and might bang it around? And a 2.0l long block will be what 160lbs before crating? Will UPS ground handle that weight?

A proper shipping company with the powerhead bolted upright and boxed properly on a suitable pallet. Two hpdi powerheads were shipped to me using Saia from Georgia and it was nowhere near 800 dollars.

150 pounds for UPS ground; I thought you were talking about the 90-pound crated, long block (Ex:$96 from WI to FL via UPS Ground).

Your engine builder probably has a "preferred" shipping method for complete powerheads?
Commercial customers get discounts off of the published "Freight" rates if they have an account.
My cost to ship 180# from WI to FL using UPS Freight would be $938 discounted to $186.

I don't know where your located but UPS freight is insane here. I do all of my freight quoting through FreightCom. They are basically a broker that has access to many freight companies to get you the best rate. I know I have done a lot with FedEx through them. They handle everything from packages to entire trailer loads. I would try to contact one of their reps to see if they can help you decide which service would be best and the associated rates.

    https://www.freightcom.com/what-we-offer/

EDIT: I recently got a ~300lb test tank sent to me. It cost about $400-$450 Canadian. That includes cross boarder shipping to Manitoba. Your shipping rates with UPS are quite far out.

Thanks guys. I have another thought... for me to ship my heavy 2.0l powerhead to my engine builder (a well known S and F vendor by the way), I reckon I could strip the block and ship it in one, then the rods crank pistons in another, to make two separate shipment each under 150#. I would worry a bit about the crank. Maybe keep it in the block and still be under 150#?

Of course, first, I would contact the builder to see if he can arrange me his freight deal.

Personally I prefer everything comes in one piece and complete. Probably so will the person you are using.

Well that's kind of my question. I've never shipped freight before. I've never heard of anyone beside Fedex and UPS. And UPS was $800 for a 90lb crate. Engine bolted upright. But I imagine there are dozens. I couldn't begin to know how to pick one, other than googling to find out who ships, then calling each one. PITA-city. Maybe as suggested use freightcom.com to shop bids? :shrugs:

    When I did that I had three boxes 2 w 1 block
Rods and pistons in each then the cranks in the third and total was less than $300 with FedEx ground.
    Just for an idea

FedEx ground comes and picks it up at your house..
If the boxes are under 150# it's no problem..
    1 box or 5
Easy to setup account and than you put in details and you get price for shipping as long as everything is accurate so is price..
I ship must stuff FedEx now much easier

No idea how to find a comprehensive list of S and F good builders. But I do know they are out there.

The best mechanic in town, Kevin from RandR Prop Shop in Las Vegas, died racing about a year and a half ago. And even he shipped engines out. So still nobody in Las Vegas that I or anyone I know trusts. Unless something recent has come up. Carbureted outboards are rare as hens teeth out here. Rich Californians buy brand new outboards every couple of years, or v8's in offshore hulls to use on the huge lakes out here.

Try freightquote.com. It cost me $325 to ship an 3 liter engine from Arkansas to Florida. They are basically a broker for a few shippers. I did have an issue though. After the shipment, they were saying that they were not sure that it was an engine but construction equipment in the box and they tried to charge me a few dollars more. 1 call to amex and that was taken care of. I think the actual carrier they used was a type of fedex freight. Not the same as the fedex store more like a wholesale division.
