First I would get some muriatic acid and very carefully remove aluminum build up in cylinder in order to see the true condition of the cylinder wall.

Thanks. A guy up the road said the same thing this morning. Gonna try that then probably throw a piston and rings in it if it's not too far out of round.

I'd run a ball hone thru it after. Sometimes a wire brush helps. Stuff rags in the cylinder and try to have the motor trimmed slightly down to keep the liquid from running twords the crank. Mike.

Mike, I dont know this but I was under the the impression that you couldn't hone a chrome bore. I'm not opposed to trying if there is a chance it won't strip it off

stuff the hole as tight as you can ,with plastic bags keep Muratic acid away from crankshaft journals it will destroy them

You must keep the acid AND the acid's fumes away from anything steel as it will ruin it.

Will do, thanks. Any recommendations on rings and gaps for the new piston?

think ya would be ahead if ya went ahead and took it completely down ta use tha acid and any kinda hone on it.. won't take but one wayward little drop ta do tha crank and/or bearings in.. it really needs ta be washed good anytime ya haft ta remove anything metal anyway... jmo.

I've took a cotton swab and dip tip of it in muriatic and try clean like that, keeps from dripping and much. But put sumthin n cyl in case of a drip ,, I had one do that but not as bad but still didnt clean up like I wanted. I've heard u cant hone a chome cyl but I've heard u can hone one but its gotta be certain hone also to achieve slickest finish possible

My bad ! The 2.4 I raced had been sleeved due to the bored bieng out of round. The rest of the process works. We would pull the piston out with the motor assembled.
Don't drown the hole with acid. I would put it on a wire brush and rub the aluminum off the cylinder. It's not a difficult process. MikeCheaters never Win !!!

I'm gonna see how far out of round it is first and that will probably determine the route I take. What is an accepted tolerance if its not perfectly round?

It doesn't take too much out of round to be a problem. Round rings don't seal well in oblong bores. If you have a good piston to replace the burnt one you can reassemble it and check the compression. You can even check it with the old head gasket if funds are tight. If it's close to the others I'd run it. You can get to the rod bolts with the intake removed.
There are 2 nice 2.4 drop on's for sale in High Performance Boating page I think is where I saw them.
I think it would be worth it to replace it instead of spending money resleeving if it comes to that. MikeCheaters never Win !!!
