Mercury Racings version of a dyno pull-more like a torture chamber....

I have never seen an engine builder hold something on the pin like this before it goes out to the customer. I guess if they can't break it, we can't break it- They build the real deal....

Hats off to Merc that is a dream job, hell id like to sit outside with some beers and listen to it.

75 minute break in that’s what most Optimax pcm do when break-in is reset actually E-tec also. Luckily they are not in need of a full reman at 100hrs or less on the high hp levels. Where’s the videos of the v8 Outboard’s on 91 fuel?

Based on this article they don’t do this particular dyno test on every motor they build, this test is specifically to certify the platform. There is no reference to what, if any dyno testing is done on customer motors.

Not saying this isn’t impressive, it is, but don’t make assumptions without the facts. Every engine manufacturer that is required to EPA certify their motors has this capability, just not using equipment that is rated over 1000 bhp. Mercury’s intent with this article is to attempt to justify the cost difference between what they charge for a hyper motor vs. what independent builders charge. It’s a legitimate differentiator which people should consider.

That is the kind of dynos we do when we build engine dynos at work. Most of the work that goes on with our customers is not WOT load testing like that it is EPA emissions mapping.

Also, most of our dyno's don't run anything close to that much power and TQ.

    Cool video.

    Mark,

There are no assumptions. Go spend a couple days at Merc. Racing watch for yourself. They run a 55 gallon drum of race fuel through the big motors in under 20 minutes. As for the EPA certifications, there are very few builders of 800+ h.p. that provide them (like less then 5). Mercury racing is the largest so they are a $$$ target for the govt. to monitor as is any other individual or corporation showing a big bottom line.

    "Where’s the videos of the v8 Outboard’s on 91 fuel? "

Kev, I would like to see the dyno. mapping of the 4.6 projects as well. My understanding is that all of the racing outboards are all run in the test tank before shipping.

    Joe,

I’m just commenting on the article, no where does it state every motor they build gets run like this. If they do then great but it would have been nice for them to say that in the article.

BTW, I know of at least one motor builder local to us who builds class 1 race motors as well as a number of 1000+ bhp poker run motors that runs each one on their own in house dyno doing a similar heat soak protocol though admittedly not to the rigor Mercury does and not in an epa Certified environment. Keith Eikert used to do the same back in the day.

That was a good opperater, he had a good handle on all his vitals.
Back when I spent a lot of time out on the road, it was fun to go by some of the bigger Winston / Nextel / Sprint / Monster cup shops in Mooresville. Seems like it didn't bother them boys to light off three or four of them 358 inch pee-wee's .. park em @ 9000 rpm ... then get up and go to lunch ..

That is my point, there are a ton of builders out there that get away without providing this data to the epa. The bigger you are, the more you are watched and governed, the more cost you incur, the more, the more, the more...Bottom line is that its an impressive operation that puts out some awesome hardware and we are lucky to have them. Now we need to get lucky enough to afford them.
