Easiest is to put an alum. plate on the exterior with a plate on the interior at the bolts to spread the load. Exterior plate should have a 90 deg. "ell'' shape at the top for strength. Lot of bass boats come with these type ofplates from the factory. Very effective. Knees are best, but can be very difficult to install correctly on some boats.

That sounds like a plan. Plate with bend at top to lip over top transom?

I have made several with 4 pieces of aluminum. Plate for the back of boat, inside of motor well, under motor well, and top of transom. Place plate on back of boat and drill holes. Plate on inside of motor well and drill holes. Bolt it together then set plate on top of transom and tack in place. Remove from boat and weld permanent. Slide over transom and bolt motor in place. Take 4th piece and place it under motor well and use as a washer for bottom bolts thru motor. Never did this on a good transom, only as a band aid but it works well.

Correct.... The 90 deg bend makes the plate much stronger. Also gives a finished look to the piece. 1/4''alum would be very strong. Might be able to go thinner. Ask your fabricator what ga. and alloy he recommends. I would prime and paint it before install. Inside and out.

I have used the plastic split wire loom stuff to cover the all thread. Works well and keeps the threads from cutting your hands!

I used these stainless turnbuckles on my Switzer when I put in the new transom.Iwanted to tie it into the top deck as well.I glassed some reinforcement to th inside of the splash well, then made brackets for the top of the Jack plate. In the end it don't look to bad,is exceptionally strong, and adjustable. Here are a few pics.Click image for larger version.

I do like the turn buckle idea. Alot easier to tighten after awhile.. if I was to wanna go all thread , I believe I'd give those a shot, for now cause it is in good shape, just gonna do big plate with channel that laps over top transom and big piece alum diamond plate on inside for bottom bolts

Don't go overboard on the metal reinforcements. They add a lot of weight quickly. Use just enough, and lightening holes are good.
