    Reed Block

    Hello all..
Currently working on a 125 (2 + 4).. Specifically reed and reed replacement ( 9 Pedal). Mercury Service Manual indicates the reed bolt torque of 80 In LBS.. This torque spec seems a bit much for this reed block. Can anyone confirm this torque? I read elsewhere a torque of 20 In LBS is more realistic.

    Thanks

80 in Lbs is less than 7 ft. Lbs.
However I am not familiar with the motor your working with.

Shop manuals (factory manuals) are seldom wrong, or have misprints that don't get corrected in subsequent revisions.

Last thing you want is one of those fasteners to come loose. Some folks use loc-tite with these small retainer bolts/screws.

I've seen overtorquing them lift them off tip of tip reed block. Be Careful!

Chaz = thinkin that ifin ya cant figure out that the pound and a half is for the reed pedal screws and the seven pounds is for the allen bolts that hold the blocks to the adapter plate. Then in all sencerety, maybe you should take your boat to a shop and have the work done for you.

Or you could torque the reed attaching screws to 2.8N-m and the and reed block mount bolts to 9.0 N-m...

My torque wrenches have both readings on them Nm on back and ft or inch pounds on front and yes i have ft lbs and inch pound torruing devices...no picture since the torquing devices are at the shop and they are top secret...

I have found torque spec inconsistancies within Mercury Service Manual. For example, Mercury calls for a troque of 100 in lbs for the air box plate bolt(s). 100 in lbs WILL crack the air box plate., I've seen this over and over again. I torque them to 60 and have never had a problem.

I will go ahead and remove the reed block screw with a torque wrench. I will consider that the factory most likely applied red loctite to the threads. By heating the bolt ever so slightly this should soften the loctite enough and maybe give me a ball park torque for the bolt.

    Thanks all for the replies..

Red is never used on reeds in a regular practice. Always blue even n manual do you have a merc manual? Money well spent if not. All info

My Merc manual for 5 and 7 pedal reeds show 25INCH pounds for reed attaching screws and 80 INCH pounds for reed block mounting bolts. This is a 135 to 200 horse merc OEM manual.
