    Outboard weights

    Is it typical for them to be published sans cowl? I understand they're going to be dry weights w/o a prop and the shortest shaft offered, but I don't think they're meant run around w/o a cowl, so surely that's included right?

    The weight given is for reference only. It's what they think they can get away with vs what the thing actually weighs.

    So marketing claims like "it's the lightest 4-stroke in its class" are really false advertising gimmicks?

    well, it's not meant to be run around with our fluids and a prop either.....circus ****.

    Just figured it was industry standard to include the cowl as assume most manufacturers do though maybe that's not the case. It just seems like things are very vague with outboards compared to the automotive world i.e. weight, torque, rev limiter, hp peak rpm and actual output because of the 10% rule etc

    I like to compare apples before purchasing

    Outboard manufactures could give more details. Every motor should have a power graph to help owners to find the best prop. Weights without cowlings would be shady.

    I agree, a prop and fluids are a given. Excluding the cowl is fudging the numbers.

    i would think so too.

    I also like like comparing apples to apples. Kinda hard to do

    I AGREE yeah 200 hp but at what rpm? same with peak torque. without those figures u dont know what your getting. if you call up merc u cant get those specs. the eactory rev limiter doesnt tell u anything, really. HI PO CARS TELL u peak torque &hp a specific rpm. i think its some mfg. conspiracy.

    What's the reason for secrecy, they're afraid of the competition? To me the only that shares dyno graphs which you could say is biased is the one that posts video dragging other outboards around, which to me proves their marketing isn't BS.

    THEYcould give a little more info to the consumer besides an owners manual. thanks for s&f or we would all be on line at the repair shop. as for the boat tug-o-war, too many variables to prove anything IMO.

    I took it as hp class as from 150 and up they all go by 25hp increments and coast guard gives the rating for max hp on a hull though the funny thing is that a hot 175 that's pushing the 10% rule and making 192hp can actually be making more than a weak 200hp on the other end of the 10% spectrum.
