Remanufactured In-Line 6
There is a link on ebay for "mercrestore" where they remanufacture in-line 6 Mercury (they also do 4 cylinder mercs). I recently acquired a nice vintage 1977 Glastron Carlson CVX-16 to replace my original that I let go years ago. It is a MN boat, it has been treated quite well and it has a 1977 Merc 115. The motor is mint in that it's obvious it has never seen salt water. There is no corrosion anywhere on the power head. I gently tugged on all the wiring and it feels good, no crumbling or disintegration. Unfortunately the carbs are missing! So I saw this link on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/MERCURY-OUT...53.m1438.l2649
My questions to this forum are: 1) does anyone here know much about this ebay store "mercrestore"? 2) They give you a choice between 90, 115, 140, and 150 hp Merc in-line 6 motors for them to remanufacture for you. I could use my motor as a core and reduce the price some. So the question (assuming I go this route), which hp to choose? I'm thinking the 140 overall was a better motor but I'd like a more "expert" opinion. Also, I would think that high performance reed valves on the intake might be worth the effort. One other thing, I don't believe Mercury began using the stainless steel drive shaft until a year later in 1978 and that would be a must for this motor. Any advise (even criticism) would be appreciated!

Period correct: this boat is in great shape, just needs a reliable engine. Frankly, I thought about putting a new Mercury 115 Pro XS four stroke on it. I even found a decal kit in a blue color scheme to match the boat. But I would rather it be period correct and I hold a lot of regard for the in-line 6 motors. My first high performance boat was a Sidewinder sweet 16 with a 1969 Merc 125 hp.

If I am understanding you correctly you already have a motor but it needs carbs. Why not just buy a set of carbs and get what ya got running. Seems much less expensive and a lot easier.

Thanks for the carb offer. I’ve spoken with our local Mercury Marine dealer whose been in the business since 1974. He may have a set of carbs. We talked about the ignition system. Apparently around 1977 they began changing over from the distributor type to individual ignition coils for each cylinder. He says the newer design is much better but it would be difficult to convert it from old to new. I’m going to do a test for fire followed by a compression test. Hopefully I’ll be able to get this motor running. But if the compression is no good then I’ll have to start looking for another motor.

It's not mine, have no idea what's under the wrapper. Came across it looking for 150 F5 stuff. Think he dropped the $ a hundred to 4!
