Boathouse does a Carb Rebuild (XR2)
Picking up a XR2 that needs some TLC.
Symptoms
- Starts fine, but when in gear, need bring revs to 1000+ to stay running
- when running, the 1100-1400 rpm is a bit choppy.
- when between 3000-4000 the motor will surge.
- 4500+ it runs fine.
- WOT from 1000rpm doesnt feel at 100%
- When you bring it down from 4500, you have to feather the throttle or it will cut out
- idle continues to bog down if not at 1000+
New Fuel Filter and Fuel Lines, running 50/1 premix.
Can anyone shed some tutorials on a carb rebuild or will a SeaFoam spray into the carbs fix this?boatless and hopeless.

Take em apart and clean em right. Get your kits and clean thoroughly. Very easy to do.

Spray into carbs will not do anything to help clean the bowls. Do as Capt and Rock stated.

so far, this is the best I've seen (having never touched an outboard aside from the sparkplugs)

Where can I find a carb gasket kit?
Also,
The control Box/Throttle seemed to be coming apart, and had sticky cables.
What would be a suitable replacement for a '87 XR2?boatless and hopeless.

Those he is working on look like a wmv carb and urs should be wh series carbs. Gonna b different, but that manual is the best thing u can buy for your motor

First thing I do when trying to diagnose many runability issues.

Check compression to see if its worth fixxing for starters. Drain fuel tank and make sure no gunkola in there. Replace ALL rubber lines. Replace fuel filter, I like clear fuel filters so you can see.Clean carbs. Check/replace plugs
Thats a good start. Just went through dang near the same on my 135 this year. Ended up replacing most of the electronics tooHydrostream dreamin

All the above - for some general tips on carb rebuilds, T-Rex explained it here https://www.screamandfly.com/showthr...o-s-and-dont-s
and here https://www.screamandfly.com/showthr...6-carb-rebuild
Using those pointers and the factory manual, I have done it a few times w/o issues. Don't forget to link/sync after they are re-installed
From what I've been told and read, Berrymans has been re-formulated and isn't quite as good as it used to be for dissolving varnish/cleaning, not sure if there is anything better out there now

Agree with above. Berryman's left behind chalky white residue after overnight soak! Very disappointed. Chemical dip bucket in the past always yielded excellent results, even after a quick (2 hour) dip. Still stinks just fine, doesn't seem to do what it used to.

You can pick up a small one that works good for carbs (and many other things like mechanical diesel injectors) from Harbor Freight. They advertise it as a "jewelry cleaner."
