Slow A$$ Bayliner!!!
I was hoping for more... maybe too much weight in the boat.
Wifey and I + baby (400 lbs)
2 little dogs (65lbs)
About 12 gallons fuel (70-80lbs)
Diaper bag / cooler / couple anchors (50lbs?)
took off the 90, put on the 120hp.
14’ boat about 1000lbs total package.
2” below pad
26p lightning
2.05 gear
5250 rpm
only 47mph ?!?!
I was hoping for at least 60
Weak slip at 21 according to merc prop slip calculator.
sounds fishy.Last edited by home made tunnel; 06-12-2018 at 05:00 PM.

Bring the anchor in? Something's up with that, what about only you without company?

Last time I raised the motor, I was having trouble getting it on plane. It would squat powerfully... then cavitate at about 15mph. Punching the throttle, or easing into it had the same result.
I'm going out again Thursday, and drop off wifey @ the beach lol.
Thank you ! Been enjoying it a lot lately. All the lil kids like the subwoofer and stereo haha.
I got a guage - I'm gunna try going solo without gear and company 1st... and bring my wrenches along to test.
Love this lil spot - salt water, but warm when the tide is going out. chilly with incoming tide. A nice island sandbar for the dogs to run around on.
Maybe i'll leave the anchors at home next time lol.Last edited by home made tunnel; 06-12-2018 at 05:21 PM.

You need to turn 6+ and not load it, less prop with the gang. See what it turns alone. Give it 33-34* , cut it to 165psi with premium and 97 jets. Are those the late run TC with the lean mains , 84?

I haven't even looked - Just slapped the powerhead on, had spark on all 4, and ran it haha.
Haven't even checked timing. Just pulled the bowls off to make sure no gunk.
Literally this was a backyard swap of 2 bad engines, made into 1 good one. Rusty salty powerhead with good compression, bolted onto a clean freshwater unit with blown powerhead.
96 powerhead and electronics. 95 everything else.
Blown freshwater motor - $250
Running salty rusty motor - $375
A bit of elbow grease... a gasket or two... some beers... paint... fuel pump and lower unit re-sealed... new skeg welded on...
Not bad $700 for a complete motor ! ! !1) 1995 14' Bayliner Restoration <--Click

No respectable Chrysler had less than 160-155. If you check set timing at cranking add 1 1/2* to get 35* cranking, 33* at full rpm. Also note if linkage pulls ign timing out at WOT, I've changed that on mine to hold max ign at WOT without issue but you need to start rich with the jets and stay tuned.
Don't see why it shouldn't run harder if you get the psi up with ign. As is you might only have 28-30* in it, it will wake up with more.Last edited by FMP; 06-12-2018 at 11:08 PM.

I edited your post.... heh heh heh.
What you meant was... 'will blow up with more"
I'm going to run it Thursday with an empty boat. See if it'll speed up to 60mph with less weight. Then play with motor height.
I really don't want to cut the head down - I had so many idle issues with the triple. I'd almost rather just bolt on more HP. I meannnnn Mercury did just make a 300hp 4-stroke

I believe it should have 155 factory, all the upper HP Chrysler fours and F5 had 165 stock. Check your timing and jets. It won't blow, I've run 165-170 with that much ign for years on a heavier boat, just don't load it, let it turn rpm.
That over the top porting gave you the idle fun. This F4 isn't going to give any idle issues with 165.
Only thing is you don't know if it's ready to loose a ring pin, that could happen after two hrs or a thousand hrs, so give her!

I must have a crappy guage - It was 120 across the board when I did a compression test before I bought it.

Throats open, three to four crank revolutions to top out the gauge? 120 seems a bit low, my 105hp has 145. My 140 is 165+

Planing off with the motor high--it is OK if it blows out. Just leave it screaming and slowly accelerating and it may well get you "over the hump" then hook up. Don't come out of it just because it cavitates--that is how many of us get on plane.
