So are they making heavier boats to handle the huge heavy motors or are they making huge heavy motors hoping someone can figure out how to build a boat to handle them.
Lots of weight and Lots of money is what I see. This new technology and modern looks are great and all, I'm totally for it. Its just a shame that your gonna spend over 100k to keep up to a 1986-96 STV with a modified carbed 2.4 or 2.5.
The modern car can now give some whoop ass on an old muscle car pretty easily these days. But the outboard boat hasn't quite gotten there yet. Luxury yes, all out No.
They need to reinvent small motors with bigger torque, hp and gear ratios. The car guys did it. So it seems the boat guys should be able too.If I don't ask any questions, I'll never learn anything.

I agree with you Randy, There are some guys thinking this is the greatest motor ever and it no doubt a step in what MAY be the right direction. However like everyone is saying even with a 36” pitch prop at 5% slip it is only around 118mph. To achieve those slip numbers you will need some damn good props and a set up. There are not many 36” props out there for the high performance market.
IMO these motors were released for the CC and bass boat markets. Not for the little world we live in. Question is will Mercury make the changes needed for us to achieve the results we need?

I was deep in the middle of the 2 stroke to 4 stroke change over in the late 1990's. It all started with a Yamaha 400 prototype that Doug Henry took to win the 1997 championship in Supercross with. By today's 4 stroke motocross bike standards it was a pig! Development made the 4 stroke not just dominate but the only way to compete and win. Weight has been drastically reduced and power increased by at least 20%. 2 strokes have always been low on torque in the lower range even with the advent of power valves which essentially moved the exhaust port up an down in the cylinder to change port timing for more torque down low. The torque curve on a 4 stroke is flat compared to the peak on a two stroke near the peak RPM. I look forward to see advancements in the 4 stroke outboard motors like were achieved with bikes.
