I have been using optronics rectangular led's. Lifetime warranty on diodes. Never had one fail in about 3 yrs of dunking in saltwater. I use heatshrink connectors and then use heatshrink tube over them. Bright too. The road side module with the clear bottom for the tag, lights up the whole back of the trailer.

Yeah I use heat shrink marine connectors than coat them in liquid tape.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I appreciate it. It stinks to do the trailer lights as a yearly maintenance. Do it once, do it right.

If you want to get all the gremlins out, start with some tinned triplex 16ga marine wire and have the ground run back up to the trailer tongue. Also don't splice into the triplex for the side marker lights, for them use separate duplex wires and run that to the tongue too. Hook it all together up front away from the water. It will be the last time you do it.....

You might like a little trick I use up here. After I strip the wires and before I slip them into marine shrink connectors, I dip the exposed copper ends into Corrosion Inhibiting Grease. (Marine Trailer Bearing Grease also works.) Then I crimp and shrink them. Works great!
As for the trailer lights, I'd stick with a name brand sealed LED unit. Since we don't have salt water up here, anything I'd recommend wouldn't have a "salt water seal of approval." The West Marine LED units on my trailer are probably 6 years old now with no problems. They replaced a set of Wesbar Submersible units that were probably 15 years old and still working perfectly. Round where I live it's a given your trailer lights probably wont work. Even if'n they worked the night before. We got some salty chit.
