    Small block Etec Evinrudes

    In small blocks, There is a 200, a 150 HO, a standard 150, and a 135 that I won't consider. I think a big block is too much weight.

the main consideration is the 150 and 150 HO. What is the difference? Which would be a better water ski motor?

for skiing is the 200 better or is the extra power upstairs?

    thanks

Go the small block 200. You will never say "damn, wish I'd bought a smaller outboard". As you said, there is no weight penalty for the extra power and you will appreciate the extra torque for skiing. Extra fuel consumption will be marginal at ski speeds.

I agree. Is there a difference in the lower unit that you would get between a 200 and a 150HO?

150HO has the lightning lower. The small block 200 has a little bit less at the bottom to gain at the top, a give and take situation. This is for G1 version which is NLA new unless you find a dealer with one in stock.

Yep, just a different lower on the HO. I would look for a G2 200 small block with a TRAC midsection ( bit lighter)

I was hoping Racer would reply - thanks. Bottom end is more important then top end - its a ski boat. A dealer near our cottage has several 150 HO G1s for sale. I wanted to know if searching further for a small block 200 would make sense.

It's not clear we are buying, but at least now I know what I would want.

If you can get a 150HO easily no reason not to, they are a great engine. The new G2 has a lot more torque and better on fuel than a 150 G1, or 150 HO.
Unless you are getting a really good deal, I personally would go the G2 200, but that's just me. At the end of the day, as long as you have a smile on your face.

I can get a new 150 HO for $13950 Cdn (11160 in real money) or an 8 hour with new replacement block 150 normal for $12000 Cdn (9600)

Is the HO better for skiing than the standard 150.

This is going to come down to my brother's tax return. If he gets enough back he will want to proceed. I'll split the cost because HP is always fun. But for me the 115 HO we have now works fine.

    G1 150 HO is 418 lb. Our 115 HO is 395. G2 150 is 496 lb

You can see the boat on the line in the post above.

Go the HO over the standard if you are getting the G1. The G2 is definitely heavier but they have awesome performance. For the price though, the 150HO is a great deal. I'd buy it happily. It will give you great performance.

If you are looking at the 150 HO G2 and the 200 HP G2 for skiing, the 200 G2 will outperform the 150 HO G2 in acceleration and low end torque.

My brother got his tax return and life is good except for color. The available 150HOs are graphite. Our current motor is white and my brother's wife and daughter prefer white. But my potential dealer can give us a 'normal' 150 in white.

How much weaker is the regular 150 than the HO? For top end and for skiing pull out. Thanks

(G2 is heavy for our boat and a lot more money, so it's G1 for us)

its a ski boat , go with a 200 and prop down 2 inches more to boost the low end and away you go . That j will handle any motor you put on it as a ski boat except maybe a v8omc , and it may do that too ...... imo.

We put the deposit on the 150 HO today. HO power trumped color in the end. 2 more cylinders vs our V4 so we should accelerate well. It will be interesting to see how it holds 13 mph with our disk. The 115 took some throttle sawing at that speed.

I've seen J's with 3 liter DFI engines at the factory. Not for me.
