I always thought merc tuned/set up there stock motors for 89 octane. At least a lot of big block I/O's I have owed came with 89 min octane stickers on them. Not sure if that's true with o/b's. I would think you, as I would run at least rec fuel (90) or ethanol free premium. If you ran ethanol free gas you would save money, you wouldn't need the startron.

93 super, skip the star-tron crap. I have 135 #'s and run shell 93, at 25 deg timing and no prob for many years. 98, 200 merc EFI jm2cts.

My last modded 2.5 fishing motor I build had 155 lbs of compression and I ran on normal 93 pump gas since no one had anything over 89 octane for marine fuel here. I had it on a 20' Vegas v-hull. It had 2.0 liter heads with .75 head gaskets, 7 petal reeds from a 260, 91 model fishing front half, 96 fishing model block, and exaust cut like a drag motor. Ran like a raped ape with no detonation problems...surprisingly. I checked plugs on a wot run and kill once a month until the motor drug #3 piston a year and a half later....thats why you should run t-stats instead of washers in a steel bore motor.
