Are all sport masters pre loading

I'm resealing a 2.5 sportmaster and it does not have a preload pinion. Did some come this way or has someone converted it? Thanks

They don't use a pin. The gears are cut up to so they push the drive shaft up and loads the bearing.

I was under the impression the sport masters where all preload bearings on input shaft. I was wondering if there was an offshore version with preload and a consumer version without? Or did someone convert this one to non preload? Just wondering for curiosity sake.

Sportys come with the two bearing preloaded drive shaft. The two bearing shaft are sometimes replaced with a CLE or even a fish motor shaft, and only one upper bearing is used,it is not uncommon to find a single bearing sporty, but it didn't come that way.You can take a fish motor shaft and cut the extra bearing seat in just a few minutes on a lathe.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking. So someone has converted this one. How can you tell if it has the hi po gears? I'm wondering if this thing has all fishing internals. What would be the tell tell signs/ differences that's noticeable between the two gear sets?

The only way I know of is the part#,however the big ratchet fish motor gears seem to do very well.Just need to be set up properly, and use good lube. When I set up a used set of gears I set the clearence to the lower limit, as they are allready "run in"

Thanks for the info. I'm gonna check the parts numbers to see what's in there. It's a non ratcheting gear set/clutch. We may be changing gears in future and want to know what's in there now. Again thanks for the help and info!

Sportys are ratcheting....not non-ratcheting. Someome was done a guts swap. Does it have a small production propshaft and carrier?

That's what I'm thinking too. It is small propshaft, but looks to be a sporty carrier or a CLE

You can put in a ratcheting clutch hub. Some grind a ramp of sorts, but I've seen them without being ground and seem to work fine.I've never seen a big bearing foreword non ratchet gear.

Thanks for the replies, I was trying to figure if someone had swapped the guts or I was loosing my mind . Thankfully y'all confirmed it was the first, because I wonder some times. It's on a XB 2002 so the non preload don't really bother me, but the gears are just starting to show a little weird wear and when I told him how much the hi po gears where, we decided to ride a little longer on them with frequent oil changes to keep an eye them. Now gotta decide if gonna swap it back to hi po or leave it like it is.

Commonly done by performance saltwater customers for many years. Production 2.4's & 2.5's motors, new out of the box, that the standard gearcases insides, where swapped into a new cresent housing(s). Very common with new customers multi-engine boats especially.
