Which oil, exactly?
Hello all,
I know this has been discussed in many threads and posts, but the more I read the more confusing and the more opinions.
I have a 2000 90HP Merc (oil injection). Can someone recommend a dependable oil and one that smokes less?
I read AMSOIL, MERCURY (3 different types) PENZOIL, there are others, I don't want my head to implode.
What I have read is there is a distinct difference between Merc oil in the light silver gallon bottle and the Merc oil in the dark silver gallon bottle. Is this factoid? Should I be running either?
Thanks..
Regards

Thanks for the replies..
Linkage is perfect carbs to pump, all is aligned per Service manual. I'm not experiencing excessive smoking, I really put it out there for input on a good 2 cycle oil. I use Mercury in the Light gray gallon bottle (from Walmart). I reads that this is an undesirable oil and I should use oil in the darker gray bottle. Can someone verify this? Is AMSOIL an option?

Please see above. Any TC-W3 rated oil will meet the requirements of the manufacturer, and is hence a good oil.
For low smoke, Alisyn is hard to beat. It is expensive, and I don't think that it is TC-W3 rated, but it is a high quality synthetic oil.Markus' Performance Boating Links:

No lab verification, but I like the pennzoil XLF for the smaller 2 strokes.(200 and less) Seems to smoke less and leaves less carbon in the cyls. For the bigger 3.0 merc motors with the oil pumps the merc prem plus is my choice. Been doing this for many years with no oil problems.

We use Amsoil HP Marine."have you met my little fly named scream?"

I run around 28 to 1 in my mercury. keeps it from blowing up. Also keeps the mosquitoes away. Its like following an old muscle car on the highway.
If I don't ask any questions, I'll never learn anything.

Also excessive smoking my be caused by incorrect injection linkage adjustment as I have seen this a few times. Gary
