400R parts/kits needed for single engine install....educate me

    .

    Hello gents!

I would like to get an idea for the parts or kits that is needed to install a single 400R MercRacing motor to a 25 foot cat. The expected top-end speed is 90~95MPH

Before I go to my rigging guy, I thought I'd get some help from my S&F friends

The cat is a true tunnel with a small center pod-like structure to protect the mid section of the outboard

This thread is intended to minimize the cost of a twin application utilizing today's 4 stroke motors

VesselView will be used for the gauges and monitoring and the zero effort controls all pictured below.

    Let's say I buy a 400R from Jaco's, what rigging kits/parts would I need ?

Pretty straight forward though you need to make sure your throttle and shift is DTS enabled, no cables on the new Verados. Off the top of my head you'll need the following:

    DTS master engine harness
Fuel sensor harness (not sure on exact part description)
Smartcraft 4 port hub (this is where you interface Vesselview)
Verado power steering kit with hoses and helm
DTS foot throttle if you are so inclined

I'd give Karen a call at Screaming Eagle Boats. They know all the parts needed as they have done this exact rigging on at least 1 Talon. She could put together a complete package including motor, vesselview, controls, harnesses and power steering and probably beat Jaco's price when you factor in all the components.

    Thank you Mark

I will revisit ScreamingEagleBoats' threads to learn how they did this.

Going to need to add on an installation kit & a key switch kit to the above. Plus the power steering kit doesnt come with the hoses. You will need hoses from the pump to the helm and from the helm to the engine. If the engine doesnt come with a ram you will need that also.

    Thank you Turbo!

I think that the turnkey boat is less than $99K with PPI interior, 400R and a CNC prop

...and a 2018 cat that is an Ocean performer to boot!

If you got room on the dash, forget about the Merc display and go with a sizable Simrad, link the engine to it and have one big display for chart plotter, sonar and engine all in one...... add a network stereo to boot

    Hi Noli,

Instead of a vessel view you might consider an AIM data logging system (or other system) and display. They are comparable price and nothing like data logging for setting up a new boat.

The addational analog inputs let you connect fuel levels and anything you might want to.

The optimax and Verado motors use a CAN bus and are compatible with many different racing data loggers.

Drop me a PM anytime of your interested in more info.

I actually do like the AIM systems. A quick google search came up with this and I also saw other systems.

This makes more sense keeping your view straight instead of always having to look to the center of the dash where the large monitors are located.

    Noli,

Have you guys run a 25 with a single yet? Not trying to be a downer but I don't know of any that have worked well other then the 24 skater that was purpose built and rigged new for Dan. I have a friend that is working with a his 25 and trying to make it run with a single now. Its become a challenge at this point and he is in the process of adding more setback.

Thank you Joe for the heads up

Can you explain further what issues I will encounter with a single outboard?

Its a challenge getting it to air out and hold the boat up. The entire CG needs to go aft. when you have limited horsepower and propeller surface to work with. The second issue (more complex then what we are chasing) is trying to use the 400 in a single application with the big gear case being exposed. There have been very few single 400 cat applications where the net speed increase justified the additional weight and cost (IMO). Most have not seen any net gain.

Weight and CG will be a VERY CRUCIAL to make this attempt a success. I am somewhat involved in this with my 24 skater project right now but I will NOT be running a single or running 400s personally. The changes that are taking place to it may end up making it an option for other people in the near future.

    Joe
