bobs nose cone cracking off?
Just picked up a carrera sst with a 200xri on it. Has a bobs low water pickup on the lowerunit and I noticed each side had a 3-4" crack where the seam is. The p/o said he sent it to Florida (where bobs shop is) and I assume they weld them on. I'm pretty sure it's just the epoxy or whatever other filler they use thas cracking and it's just cosmetic but I want to make sure and thought I would verify on here that Bob's weld them on before I grind down to look for the welds

well no matter if its epoxy or welded youl still need to get right down and see why its cracking.
Then and only then will you know 100% if its been welded on.
from what I have read on the internet, just because it was put on at bobs dont mean it was put on right or even welded !!!!
I would strip it down and find out if its welded, and if it is and only in a few places get it finished off properly by a good alloy welder so its
got a seam all the way round.
there is no reason for the epoxy or any filler to crack if the cone dont move about a bit.
just my thoughts on it, im sure other will give the correct answers.
from the pics I would say its not welded .

Make a saw horse drill a hole in the center for your drive shaft turn the case upside down in the hole. Get a grinder and some sanding discs and mask and fly at her.
I re-did mine a few years ago. I used this stuff called danaglass and smoothed it over the area. Theres a link on her to what i did ill find it. Its worth it for a few reasons. Peace of mind is the biggest one. Cost 20 bucks to fix. Send it to Bobs hmmm maybe 200+? Took me a sunny afternoon and never did it before. Easy as pie. its been 6 years and never had to touch it since.

WellI am pretty sure the reason that it cracked is because the previous owner used a transom brace that braced off the lower unit so I'm going to pull it off grind out all the cracks and re epoxy it on. Going to pick up a motor mate or something similar for towing.

Its an Allison foil. I think they are 120 bucks or so. Theres some one on hear who makes a Carbon one also a little bigger and a little more money but they really do work. Plane faster stay on play at slower speeds. Worth it. Some dont like them on but alot of love them on like me.

If you weld the cone on or tack weld it in various spots is there any risk in damaging any of the seals or bearings?

I've always disassembled lower to make sure no damage is done. There is a lot of heat involved when welding aluminum. Not saying it can't be done, but I've always dissembled and like the fact of getting lower resealed anyway.
