What it takes to race a Mercury Racing outboard
So many people say "Outboards are so reliable" or "You can hold the throttle wide open and they never break"... Sure it looks like that, but let me show you what it really takes to keep them running.

Last time I priced a 502/525 longblock from Mercury racing it was 20k. U can still fix alot of outboards for that. Ever put a starter in one?

You can make a small fortune racing a boat, as long as you start with a large one.

I heard similar. And the duty cycle was 50 hrs??
Docked beside a 46' Cigarette on Lake Erie last year that had twin 1350's.
Do we know what that block started as?? I couldnt tell by looking at them.
Proving that, if you have to ask......
To add to Michaels point:
When I would get sick of working on the twin OBs on my 24' Sonic I would start looking at I/Os.
Had a friend w/a 25' Baja w/a single 500 HP that ran right beside me. Thought...., a pair of them in front of a pair of Bravos might be nice..
I then found out that anything over 500 HP's though a Bravo is Russian roulette and @ 100 hrs (I think) the HP 500's need the heads gone through or they start dropping valves!
Ive seen a ton of them for sale w/hrs on them and no mention of the valve train. Who knew to look at this?
Educated me that anything beyond my Sonic was out of my league.
PS, hilarious video!Last edited by Instigator; 05-09-2017 at 05:44 AM.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.
