Is my lower unit shot? (Video)
Looks like a good amount of shaft play. Am I looking at a new lower? And what could have caused this?

Looks done to me. Especially when the outside of the bearing is smaller than the sleeve it goes in.
If I don't ask any questions, I'll never learn anything.

Where you having any problems? Have you drained oil and checked for metal in oil and magnet on drain plug? Oil looks funky. A non pre- load pinion fishing lower will have some slack, beacause it relies on upward thrust from pinion while turning to load upper bearing. If there is any metal or water in lower need to have it inspected. If no metal or water your good

is there room to have a shim/sleeve made to go in there to tighten up the bearing .
if that is a no no then its a case of cleaning it all out , getting it sleeved then boring to oem size again.
I would simply chuck it away, anything can be re-sleeved with decent machine .
just what I would do with a loose bearing housing, atleast worth a try unless you can get cheap gear cases over there

It is shimmed to set pinion depth. But there is no lower tapered bearing to hold preload on upper bearing. Just has needle type bearings for lower support. When turns the helical cut pinion forces shaft upwards and loads bearing into race. On a preload lower there is a a lower tapered bearing and can set constant pre load.

That's normal for a single bearing non preload case. Unless your making metal it's fine.
