Very True!!
BUT if a person had to take a operation/safety class the very 1st time a boat is registered in his name at least it may save other lives!!
Case in point; Last Summer wife and I were meeting a boat, at night, coming in from fishing. I could see his Red bow light from 1/4 mile away so kept to his right. The Red light kept getting closer....I kept going more to the right until I finally just shut down and hit him with my spotlight so he would for sure know where we were. As he went by, You Guessed it.....His lights were reversed!!!!
Not to mention all the younger guys who think it's cool to have solid red or green LED's all the around their rub rail!!!!
I see nothing wrong with a person made to have a mandatory BASIC knowledge of a vessel before they are able to operate a boat legally.....then they can enjoy the pleasures of boating without endangering others enjoying the pleasures of boating!

We had a kid running an inflatable in the keys.... parents thought kid was old enough to use it. He ran someone over and killed them then fled..... So, not just first time buyers need education, everyone who operate a boat needs it. Unfortunately, it will soon get to the point where everyone who operates a boat will need a license with yearly renewal. I have been boating since I was born (basically) and hate the thought that I will have to jump through the same hoops as the idiots.

Always found it interesting how alcohol and boating seem to go hand in hand. Cant think of any other motor sport where its so prevalent and accepted. Yes, even among screamandfly members.

I agree Chris. I consider myself fortunate to not drink (I have no desire after watching what it has caused some of my family members). Its really amazing with the fast boats that are already on the edge that guys feel the need to add another element of reflex hindrance to the equation. We just ended bike week and the same thing takes place there-you actually have to watch out for other bikes as much or more then cars in the late hours knowing that over half of them are hammered.
I am not a fan of more legislation and or licensing but a required driver/safety course for a first time boat owner I would not oppose. I also don't oppose the first time bike owner required education class that Keith mentioned. I was required to take it due to the fact that I was under 18 and it was a worth while course.

But getting back to my original point, I absolutely do not believe for a minute that any Safe Boating course would have prevented this cocaine and alcohol fueled high speed crash.

I agree-you just can't fix stupid and we will always have that small percentage of our society that falls within the category. We are just lucky that it was a single vessel incident Vs. him hitting an innocent person in his path. I have seen several boats on the rocks, shore, and piers growing up on the Great Lakes and having the end markers (channel entrance) sometimes 1000 ft. from shore. Take a look at the S. break wall in Muskegon for example.

No one can deny that drugs/alcohol are a huge factor that no amount of training will ever overcome. Another possible contributing factor is all of the boats interior lighting was on, blue lighting all along the gunnels along with console lights, anyone who has done much night running will agree you can't see very well with the glare from any interior lighting fwd of the driver. Something not discussed but very important. Slow that sumbeech down and pay attention to your surroundings. Day or night....Would have prevented 90% of the fatal accidents we see on the news.

he was already breaking 2 laws, intoxicated and illeagal drugs, not sure about speed as he was still in the ocean but I belive there a 25 mph max speed at night on inland waterways and navigable inlets and channels so that would make 3.
