Hi James. As you can see in this picture, the lower unit had a loose bolt up under the tab (notice the air gap between mid and lower). I had problems with this about three years ago, but without other damage. At that time, we replaced the bolt with one size larger and re-threaded the mid to accept that bolt.
I guess the oversize bolt eventually worked loose (as it did previously with the original bolt), and then downward forces from romping the .... out of it caused a pivot point at the front two mounting studs.
Pivot point worked the aluminum casting up and down causing cracking, which continued to propagate until it was completely cracked all the way through. Which means, I have been running a broken mid section for who knows how long!!! Yikes!!!
We replaced it yesterday with a fresh mid, and I used a bunch of the red loctite on that darn bolt this time.
Now I will check for this every time. Thank you

I had a sea star end cap loosen and come off at 104mph. I let out and the whole boat turned and went bow high. It got real quiet till it came back down I hit the gas it straitened back out I idled back to ramp. Closest I've ever been to getting wet. Not fun. Now we locktite the threads and peen the edge so it can't unscrew. The end caps were installed by sea star it was a brand new pro system with a couple hundred miles on it.

All these pictures just drive home the need for a "flight" check first.
Good to know, areas unseen needed to be checked.
Sunkist.... Your boats name should be ADRENALINE !!
