I think the 74ish vented cowling 150 was a J block as well.

Most 150's aren't J's ... only the 1500XS is the J ... probably a little under 1%

Save for the Blue pre XS 1500's.

I am restoring my first I6, a1975 Blue Stripe 1500, louvered cowl, short shaft, with the "J" stamped on the block. Came with .082 main jets, etc.

I "think" the only thing this motor does not have that the 76 up Red Stripe motor have is the factory low water pick up LU and the cool red Decals.

Maybe this is the 1% ??

Might the stamped "J" be what to look for?

That's even rarer ... 0.1% of all 150's. I suspect Merc made 250 of them to meet APBA rules.

I got a 1974 1500 by block serial number that is a staed J block
