Miami Approves $45 Million For Marine Stadium...

...The City of Miami just approved a $45 million dollar plan to restore the famed Miami Marine Stadium. This is the also the home of the Miami International Boat Show, and officials said they hope to also include the restored Stadium in the future of the show. Miami Commissioners voted in November to borrow the money to fund a remodel of the stadium, as well as pay for a 35,000 square foot maritime center. The revamping of the stadium is part of a larger plan the city hopes to undertake to remake Virginia Key, including an earlier plan to redesign, rebuild and run two marina's along the Marine Stadium Basin. The National Trust for Historic Restoration also raised $110,000 for the effort.

It would not take much to restore the stadium, it's structurally sound, just needs new seats, rails, clean up and paint. $45 million can go a long way so long as there are no cost over-runs, but it is Miami and the crooked contractors will rape the project.

Restoring the stadium .. and holding races , are two different things . I hope they do more with it than hold concerts and have the boat show once a year .. !
Between the sacred cow lovers and some obscure seaweed that the tree huggers will surely find , they will have them tied up in court forever ...
Or maybe the Trump trickle effect will take place and the "powers to be" will come to their senses ...

    That's cool. I'm glad it's being updated...

I Spent many a day there growing up in Miami. My buddies and I used to put my Dads boat ( 17' WellCraft 115 OMC ) in at sunrise in a marina around the point from the marine stadium just to be able to ski in perfect water inside the east end of the stadium....no other boats were there that early. Skied until some race boat person showed up for test n tune, or whatever, then we had to leave. Didn't have to be asked, we just left. No worries..usually had my fill of skiing by then.

Watched many a races there as well, in the stands and or rafted up with many boats just outside the coarse area.....my favorites were the unlimited outboard tunnels, back then they were IL6 with stacks. Loved the marathon starts they had where their boats were beached on the east end with the drivers standing near them. When signaled, they ran, pushed them out, jumped in, lite them up and away they went...Too cool. And Very Loud...

Went to a few concerts there too. Stage was a moveable barge set up in front of the stands.

Great memories there. I actually wanted to buy one of the outboard tunnels to race before my first car...Dad said NO!

Without question , the place had become an eyesore . I'm happy to see it finally getting the attention it has desperately needed since hurricane Andrew .
It was deemed unsafe in 1992 . Notice how it hasn't caved in over the last quarter century . More political than structural damage .
Yes , I look forward to visiting the new "Miami Marine Stadium " . I think the best attitude to have is to expect nothing ... and hopefully be pleasantly surprised ..

    Killer!
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

Now they NEED to get some racing planed , we need to get interest going in boat racing , It's about dead, I grew up in N Tonawanda , Niagara river , they had a HUGE starting clock with two inboard races per year , I never cared about joining that group because you had to have a dedicated boat that did nothing but go to race's , I justified getting into MVP because I had a Hot Rod for pleasure use and a race boat, you need serious $$ for just racing , I'd rather spend my money on real estate , something that would go up in value

we were in Miami for Christmas, drove old cutler thru the Gables, down to the grove and up Brickle into downtown, WHOA. the number of new highrises is astounding. no shortage of finances down there. looking foreward to the next trip, maby the boatshow, can stay at moms but they are ready to sell out and come north.
