I ran a ton of that stuff through an old crossflow Johnson with no problems. As far as I know that thing's still running.

    Found an old thread here

Jay Smith says: For steel motors I've observed IMO you can't beat the Pen. blends's quality nor price .

    It's a win win situation...

    Pennzoil tech support says:

Thank you for your inquiry. Our Pennzoil Marine XLF was developed
for engines that are "seasoned" or have beeen in service for a few
years. It is made for high displacement carburated or directed
injected systems also. It is formulated to a higher lubricity limit
to provide excellent protection again piston scuffing yet still meet
    and exceeds NMMA TC-W3.

    Next Question,
So does that mean that the XLF oil is a better quality oil than the
premium plus? I'm still not sure which would be better in my motor.

    Answer,
Basically, the XLF is for engines that has had some hours of wear and
tear. Thus the extra lubrication. If you engine has no issues, stay
    w/ the Premium Plus product.

If you're not running a synthetic, you could probably just as well run the Super Tech blue jug stuff...

The point of this was to show that there IS a difference between the two Pennzoil oils. -- Increased ZDDP for a little more wear protection.

On a side note, for those of you not running fully synthetic, who runs Quick silver premium plus? I've never ran the stuff, as I have read way too much about it causing carbon/soot build up. It has an obvious huge increase in anti-wear additives....

I ran it in my 1988 2.4 200hp on my walk around cuddy off shore for 20+ yrs on the Premium Plus ( trying to remember if it was out in 88) or at least since I could get it without any issues. Never fouled a plug or had any ring sticking issues. I also spent a LOT of time idling looking for shipwrecks with electronics. Gary

The moybendum was added by Merc and Yamaha when they were having all the problems with the initial DFI motors. It works but has a nasty side effect of being Very SOOTY. You can spot a prop thats been on an OPti a mile away and the Yamaha HPDI spark plug running Yamalube.
Put Pennzoil in either of those and they are nice and clean.

I've been running Pennzoil Premium Plus in my engine. I went through 8 gallons of oil this fall (a good 5 hrs of fun) pumping it through my carborated 2.4 Mod Vp Oval Port at 8000 plus rpms with a fuel/oil mixture of 24 to 1, a few times at 32 to 1 with 110 octane race fuel and 195 psi cylinder pressure. Never had one single issue except my highly polished stainless steel prop is quite sooty. The plugs keep looking like brand new too. So I guess I'm going to stick with Pennzoil Premium Plus as well. I usually buy it on amazon in a 3 gallon pack if the bulk price isn't retarded high like it is sometimes.
If I don't ask any questions, I'll never learn anything.
