Speedcoat vs other
Has anybody ever had experience using speedcoat or other brands to use on the last say 5' of the boat? Is it worthwhile or a waste? Is it better to just use gelcoat or an epoxy 2 part paint and then wet sand it?
Any insight into this would be great.

Hey Mikey, I'm gonna use automotive type epoxy primer on the running surface of jr's 15R. That's what was recommended by a well known local glass wiz.

We used to use gray DuPont lacquer based primer, wet sanded to a satin finish. Worked as good as Speedcoat.

Why add weight??? Just sand gel with 120 grit.

Not much weight, probably only 6 sq.ft. or so, not the entire bottom. Seems we used 320 or 400 paper. Sanded primer gave a better surface finish than sanding the gel coat, as I recall. We tried almost anything back then, even talked one guy into ,wiping grease, onto the bottom of the boat. What a mess to clean up!

Perfect, I figured sanding the gel/using paint, or as it seems using primer instead would be just as good as anything else. I thought I better just ask the question before I did anything to see if the stuff really stacks up to its name or if its just a waste.

Do what the sailboat racers do. 400 grit sanded finish.
Make all trailing edges of the running surface sharp where they meet the transom so water breaks free.Last edited by Mr. Demeanor; 10-29-2016 at 09:42 AM.
