That's usually how that works on boats that aren't re-cored...Wish I could have made it this weekend, looks like it was another good one.

Update - Thanks to Scream and Fly I have sold the red boat. Frank Mole picked it up this morning. He is a good guy, I would not hesitate to recommend him. Thanks to Olboatman (Gary C), it was a pleasure dealing with you. I hope we meet in person in the future.

In the process I think I have found a 15" mid and gearcase w/ low water pickup so I can turn my 77 150 ELPT Merc into a pseudo 1500 XS. That will go on the Apricot Viper. Again, all thanks to good people here on S&F.

I still need to sell the 1977 115 Johnson. It's listed in Outboards for sale under Buy My Johnson. Thanks everyone!

Congratulations Darrel! Those Vipers sure are beauties! I really hope to see those in person and most especially, photograph them. Just incredible!

Thanks Greg. I had to sell the red boat but that means I can hunt for a 1500XS. I found a buyer and he was able to work with Frank Mole to get it shipped. Both the buyer and I are very happy, all thanks to this forum. Everyone I have met here is first rate. It is a pleasure to deal with such good people. S&F is a wonderful resource. Thanks for everything. Darrel

    Hey Guys –

I write to seek advice. I am trying to plan the set up of my first Hydrostream. I have been reading a lot about setting up inline 6 motors on Vipers. From what I have read here, Vipers do not like setback as it increases their tendency to porpoise. I found a great deal on a new in the box Bob’s 6” hydraulic jack plate and bought it. Now I am wondering if I should use it at all.

I am going to be running a 15” shaft w/low water pick up. I’m trying to close a deal on a 1500XS motor, but if that fails I will be converting my 77 150 20” motor to 15”. I am also going with a SeaStar hydraulic steering and 1500 XS motor mounts (although I have solids as well). I also plan to run a foot throttle, blinker style trim and jack plate switches (if I do end up with a hydraulic jack plate) and of course a kill switch.

So my questions are - What should I be thinking of for setback, prop shaft height, props, etc.? I have a nice 24P Laser II prop and I think I may have found a 28P 14” chopper. That may be too much? Maybe 24 or 26 is more realistic? What else am I missing that I should be doing?

I will keep researching, but any insight you guys can give me is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Still on the learning curve, Darrel Click image for larger version.

While not having any personal experience with a viper, I do know that 6" of set back is too much for just about any motor on that hull and even more so with the 15" mid. I would say 2" with the short mid, or even less if you can.

Great looking boat and motor combo for sure. Love it!

    This.

I am not sure where your prop shaft will end up with the 15" inline in relation to the pad, but that is where I would start. Mock it up flat on the transom and see where you're at. I would see how far below you are at all the way down and go from there. Even if you end up a little above you should be OK with low water pickup.

Thanks, that's what I've read. BUT I look at as many pics and videos of Vipers as I can find and I see guys running all kinds of plates that look to be between 4-6". At least the V6 guys seem to.

My objective is not top speed. I want to put my kids in the boat and have it ride smooth and handle decent. I will not be towing anything with it, I've got a "family boat" for that. If the boat porpoises and rides like crap, no one will get in it. There will be times I want to throw a speed prop on it, take it out myself and let it rip to the extent I can. Maybe a shorter manual jack plate that I can quickly adjust is a better idea than a hydraulic one.Click image for larger version.

Hmmm. Then I might have a new in the box 6" Bob's hydraulic plate for sale.
