Question Has Mercury ever produced an V8 outboard?

Maybe a stupid question, please take it easy. Did Mercury ever produced an V8 outboard? I have read a lot of historic pieces on S&F but never seen one mentioned, but someone I spoke is convenient they did. Thought this might be the place to get a more definite answer.

    Cheers!

Yes they did.... But they didn't sell enough to keep them on the market, and they bought back the ones that did sell or recalled them.... A Mercury dealer buddy of mine told me that.... Cause I asked the same question !!

Well, guys, I had 40+ years there, and about 15 of those in a plant that did crankshaft splines and broaching, as Chief Inspector, a V-8 crank would have had to come to our plant and my layout inspectors to have the upper spline orientation checked, and we never checked a V-8 crank. Seems to me somebody stuck V8 decals on the first 3.4's at a race in Europe. I think I remember a V8 mockup in the reception area at Engineering Plant 6 in Oshkosh, as well as a flat plane 12. And of course the Wizard 12 and the X12 did exist. I had counter rotation gearcases on test in Placida - not getting many hours on them, asked why, they were using that test boat to chase the X12 around and tow it in when it broke -

The mistake was an honest one. When the 3.4 came out the power was amazing. I remember riding with Louis Collins I think in Alexandria with one of the first ones in a 22 Eliminator. They started trashing main bearings and it seems I remember a rumor there was a recall. I wonder if the new ssm could handle the torque now? Ya gotta admit it would be a great project
