545 epoxy primer over bare steel

i know this doesn't pertain to a boat, but can i apply 545 to bare steel, then apply hi build surfacing primer over the top of it, then bodywork/paint? looking for something to give good corrosion/rust resistance on an auto body application. thanks

Not familiar with 545 but epoxy should stick well to bare metal. How big of bare metal spot??? What are you working on??? I personally would just use self etching primer and than high build primer. I for 10-15 years used a PPG product NCP 270 primer it is corrosion resistant and I have put it directly over some very big bare metal areas with no failures. It is a high build primer that sticks to just about anything and just about any sticks to it. Unfortunately PPG quit making it this because of something in the red pigment but the have a product NCP 272 its the same product but gray but I light the red better it was more self guiding. As for body filler I always used evercoat Z-Grip sticks to bare metal well and sands very nice. Hope this helps.

I appreciate it, using it on new quarter panels. I was debating the 545 vs primer/sealer

For bare metal you are supposed to use self etching primer.

545 is an anti corrosive primer. Good stuff. Used over bare, blasted, steel years ago on my old F-250. No rust or problems with the sub surface going away. Covered it with imron using the old 192-s activator. Still looks new, 10 yrs old now at least. Never waxed it either.....

With any type of painting specially protective coatings it the preparation of the surface that's going to be painted that's the critical part ,get that 100% right and the paint will be able to do what its intended to do and last for a long time
Messing round with boats is fun !! the learning never stops ,even after more than 30 years there's always something new happening somewhere ! BUT somethings never change and some problems never go away and just keep reoccurring !!so moved into Composite Forensics , Now that something completely new !!

Wasn't there something about 545 that you had to overcoat it in a certain time frame otherwise it had to be sanded before application of anything else over it?

So that would be the best way, apply over bare steel, scuff it a couple days later and use a regular primer and then bodywork without breaching the 545 under it

It will protect the clean steel so you can put anything you want over it.....

What does it say in the instructions on the container ?
Or consult the supplier they should be able to advise you !
