    Challenger or Scorpion?

    Hi Guys,

I just picked up this "Challenger 21" but after looking at the serial it is "SMIxxxx86" (brass tag on the transom brace in the bilge area). Does this stand for Scorpion Marine Inc or something of that nature? Is this boat actually a Scorpion?

Ok. I'm not concerned it's stolen, I have the back story to 1997. I'm just curious if anyone else out there with a scorpion or a challenger can confirm how their serial number starts.

Check with the Coast Guard boat manufacturers database. Its on-line. They gave the hull number prefix letters to the builder originally. This will tell you who it was, and what brand it is/was. Good luck.

I show Challenger Boat Works having a prefix of CIK and Challenger Boat Inc being CHE. Scorpion marine is SCN and Scorpion power boat is SOP.

So I guess it was Canadian built which collaborates the history I was told? I will do some investigating with Transport Canada tomorrow and see what I can find out through them.

Charger also built some Challengers back in the day. But I bet it's a Scorpion.

Transport Canada wont reveal the records, they will only register the boat to me. Maybe someone on here has a serial number starting with SMI and can confirm?

So if this tag is incorrect, is there another spot I should look to find the hull identification number on a scorpion/challenger?

I thought you could tell the difference by the cut of the transom?

You can, post a picture of it showing the transom and splash well. My dad can tell that way, he had a 21 scorpion and we have a project challenger with the stepped hull
