Had to put my dog down......harder than I thought !!

Well after 15 1/2 years ole Jake had to be put down. He lived his entire life on our farm, just enjoying himself. He used to run so fast he'd throw a rooster tail....swear to God. My friends all called him the "Freak Of Nature" We all think we have good dogs, but this guy, he was the best.

Jake had dementia, and his hind legs didn't want to work real good, he could barely see, and was deaf in the end - but man did I love that Dog, my middle daughter stayed in the room with me when they put him down, I give her credit for being a tuff kid. We both cried and said our good bye's ......... the farm seems very different without him, he did leave me with a gift though....his son - seems that Jake took off to the farmer down the road and got locked up with his female Rottweiler ( Jake was a lab / Sheppard mix but looks all lab - yellow ) His sons name is Lambeau and is all black, and just as crazy as his dad was at 2 years old.

Just needed to share this, get it out of my system - man I miss that dog, funny how attached we get to our 4 legged friends isn't it!

    Thanks for letting me vent...

Sorry to hear Chris. Most of us have been there and if the loss of a dog/pet doesn't make you cry you are missing some important parts. Pets become family members and any loss to the family is gonna hurt. Sounds like you gave him paradise to live in and at 15+ years he was a lucky dog. And you are correct, it's a lot harder than you think.

Still miss my last ger shepherd "JD," been 6yrs. One of a kind dog, and I could never find another like him, and won't even try... Your Jake and my JD, are in a real good place waiting for us.

So sorry to hear this I went through this about 3 months ago like you I stayed till the end. You were a good dog owner and a better father for your daughter to be with you. Like said that was a lucky dog.

Dutch, white Sheperd, was 11 when I had to send him to the Rainbow Bridge. And that was 30 years ago and my screen's a little fuzzy now. These furry critters don't become friends, they grab a crucial part of our hearts and never let go. Jake'll be waiting at the Rainbow Bridge and he'll be just like that puppy you originally knew.

Been almost a year since we out put our 15 yr old shepherd/collie down. Not my first dog, but by far the best behaved I've ever had. My 2 girls are 16 and 13, so he's all they've ever known. Still upsetting knowing he's gone, but in the condition he was in during his last few days we know he's in a better place. Gone, but never forgotten.

Chris. I now how ya feel and its ALWAYS tough. But damn dogs, giving freedom them to "be a dog"? Cared for, fed, warm place to crash out with you? And look the joy it gave YOU "showing there stuff" I had to put down my last Golden with cancer at 9, but she would jump off the dock running start, belly flop and LEAVE A WAKE chasing that tennis ball. My now Golden is going 13 now, getting old, with "old bones", but healthy. She can't jump anymore in the van for "ride". But got her as a 6 week pup, and "always be my baby".

Hearts out to ya....always a sad day..(and WAY beyond) that will never go away .."missed"...

Hardest thing I ever had to do.
Never had kids so my dogs have always been my kids. Had two labs, both lived almost to15. Remember putting both of them down like it was yesterday.

I buried the ashes of both, on their favorite beach on Pelee Island in Lake Erie.

    I visit them often.

    Sorry for your loss Chris.
You have to look at the 15 years of joy he gave you.
