    1969 Merc 1000 Tower of Power won't pee ???

This had been sitting for a while. I did wiring harness, fuel lines, carbs, water pump kit (housing, base plate, gaskets, impeller).
    Starts good and sounds nice.

It won't pee and the block is getting hot. On the muffs the water sucks in if you raise the rpm. Water is coming out the exhaust around the prop shaft. I found mud in the pee hole. Once cleaned you can blow back thru the hose and it is clear. With it running there is smoke coming out the pee hose but it is dry.

Any ideas? Where could it be blocked?

    Thanks ahead of time

sounds like exhaust plates or gaskets ,warped/gasket broken/salted thru plate/hole melted thru diverter plate/exhaust pressure getting into water passages and pushing water back down to pump.common problem.pull powerhead-remove left side ehx plates/inspect /replace.id'e do intake diverter plates gaskets also.inspect pistons for scratches.i got one hanging that needs 2 pistons myself.good luck-welcome to merc i6 world-th

Possibly the top seal where we water tube enters the powerhead is not seated proper. Take lower unit off hook garden hose up directly to that tube and see if you can cool the motor that way.

Thanks guys. It took a couple times trying to blow thru it with the garden hose but it finally started flowing. Put the lower unit on and it ran fine on the muffs.

Was the old impeller missing pieces? If so they can get jammed into the powerhead.

The impeller was ruff but it was all intact. No history on this engine so it is a crap shoot. Anxious to lake test it.

It pees fine now. Of course now that it runs ok and pees good the lower unit is leaking. I should have took it in for seals whilst I was fixing all the other problems but we didn't know if the thing would even run when I started messing with it.

85% of those motors from that era leak under the water pump. The driveshaft is not stainless steel and over the years it pits up with rust. Then it lets water by. You can either have a machinist weld it back up to spec or speed sleeve it.

Of course other seals can be bad as well, but that is usually the first place I look.

have shaft redone don't use sleeve tried that burned up seals quickly . thickness of sleeve puts too much tension on seal rubber at high rpm
7000 it will be toast ,maybe a low rpm 5000 will make it ok

My mistake. All is good. I had it running yesterday and left it tilted on the last pin hole. Water laying in the exhaust loosened some of the old oil/goop probably left from winterizing. The brown goop dirbbled out and left a brown spot on the floor. There is no brown oil in the motor anywhere since I went thru it. I had put green in the lower unit and Merc Premium Plus is green. No water in the lower unit, I pulled the plug to check.

Now I guess it is ready to go for a ride.

    Thanks everybody!
