The 38 Scarab was actually a 377 Scarab and it was done in the Palm Beach color scheme for the Miami Vice edition...Very cool boat for its time...If you owned one back then you were a super rich, stud, bad ass guy!

The 377 flat (KAAMA Version) was actually slated to be discontinued when it was given the nod for Vice. It was given some cosmetic changes and renamed KV (KAAMA Vice) in homage to Betty's boat and the Vice program. They removed the gun wale padding, split the bolsters, replaced the wood lower cabin doors with a plexiglass slider, moved the navigation lights to the deck, replaced the cabin with the soon to be discontinued Raider cabin, changed the style of Bomar deck hatches and moved them 12" ahead to accommodate a relocated bulkhead.
The first two series boats (Star 1 and Star 2) must have already been laid up for the 377 platform when the choice was made, because they have the 377 cabins, hatch locations and wood lower door. Wellcraft had very little time to have the first two boats ready for season 2 filming. The third star boat for that season was a full fledged KV with the Edition style hull stripe.
That boat never appeared in an episode, but was equipped with camera mounts like Star 1. It was primarily used for photo shoots and publicity purposes.
I purchased Star 2 from the original owner who purchased it in July of 86 after the season 2 boats were released from filming duties.
As far as I can figure, she's the last 377 configuration built. The hull is stamped as a 377. My 86 Vice Edition is stamped as 38KV

Do you have any pics from the project?
I talked to Bill Taylor at Miami and told me they had the deck off.
That was the first I had heard anyone mention raising the deck. Not even in the magazine article.

Roy & John Harmon(RIP) of Bilt Rite Manufacturing, never did any prototype, design, or upholstery for Bob Saccenti's or Ben Kramer's Apache's. I knew the Harmons.. Good guys. Apache always had they're own, in house, upholstery team.

The Miami Vice Scarabs and a certain shiny metallic blue Hydrostream V-King that used to terrorize Lake Alexander in MN are the two reasons I got into boating. Loved those big Scarabs........ and Sonny Crockett too for that matter - LOL.

The last time I saw the boat I went to Port Credit harbour to give the engines a tune up,was probably the following season to rigging it! I was at a Race in Miami 86-87? with the Championship 24 Skater and we heard there was a race from Trenton. to Toronto, Billed " Fastest boat on lake Ontario". I booked it back from Miami to be here for the race but they said no Professionals.[like we were making money}LOL. I heard that scarab which was now owned by the son of a shoe manufacturer here had re-rigged the boat with blown big blocks and busted up a couple bulkheads in the race. [many yrs. have passed since then but thats how I remember the story of that hull!

Somehow I don't think we're talking about the same boat.

It's the right boat, but I think there's two boats in the mix. The original build sheets from Wellcraft showed it had 420s.
Brian and Wilma Ross bought it from Bill for the poker run series and I bought it from them.
There wasn't any other owners in between

I believe it was Bill's first boat ,came to us new without the transom even cut! I remember trying to decide on a stock x dimension or raising it ,but didn't want to take a chance raising it with the anemic 330 package that was being supplied. It's possible the boat I'm thinking of with the blowers [I believe the guys name was Herzog]? , might have been a different hull, but I thought there was only one vice scarab up here.
