There could be a time warp in your garage and the sound you hear is an alien jumping to another dimension..... Or it could be a pc of metal expanding and contracting?

I hear that sound every 5 years or so. It is my garage door spring breaking. Just fixed it about 5 days ago actually. When they go it is maybe a bit louder than what you are describing.

Given where you live (ie it's cold in the winter) I'd go with ground frost.
Water expands when it freezes, so does the water in the ground. As it expands it cracks, thus the noise.

If there is a yamaha in the garage it might just be the exhaust housing rotting away

Built my parents house 20+ years ago and about 2 years ago it started moving. There situation is mine subsidence and it makes some loud noises on occasion. The insurance company is doing a geological survey and so far the house has moved about 6" east pushing the driveway out into the street causing a huge speed bump that had to be moved to make the driveway accessible again. Their neighborhood has 17 current subsidence claims so apparently this is somewhat common. Check with the county and see iffn there has been mining in your area at some time.Rock

I was in the kitchen one day and heard a loud "crack"! Thought something fell in the sink? HA! EARTHQUAKE! deep 6.8 and lasted 35 seconds, hanging on to the fridge and counter top, watch the cedar tress wiggling away outside! Scary fun! No damage me, just lots stuff knocked off shelves!

I had a spring break sounded like a whip hitting a wall. Neighbors went thru the garage window. They snap hard.
