Tower of power ?s
I am looking for and have looked at a few older 4 and 6s from 70 to 115hp and they have been say 63 to 72 year range.
The price's are all over the range from 100 to 1500 or more.
My questions are what years are the best to get for somewhat reliability, performance, parts replacement, and just over all good engines. This is for a vintage boat so I need the tower look and sound. Needs to be 75hp to 100hp. Would like power trim, where they avlib. in those years? Also I should try to stay under 300lbs. I am kinda new to the outboard thing but not performance boating and I don't want to learn the hard way so I am asking you guys what are the best years, size, price's?
Thanks, any help would be great. So many projects so little time

Even the 6 cylinders were only 300# so you are ok there. Some of the early to mid 70's motors wiring had a problem with the insulation, it will be dry and cracking and falling off the wires. The sometime around 1980 they started using the switch boxes instead of distributors, but I don't think that would sway me one way or the other if I found a nice clean motor.

Thank you, I have found a 1979 that is very clean fresh water only with pwr trim and all controls and have seen it run. appears to be very nice and cared for. 1700.00, oh its a 90hp not a 100 but is there much difference between them? I am not sure if the $$ is to high or not only what I have been reading on the fourms tells me it is.

Those are great runners. I had a 79 90hp on this Glastron ssv151. It ran 48 on GPS and the hole shot was ridiculous.
The compression was around 145psi on my gauge.

Humm, that makes me wonder the comp #s on this were 125 all 6 holes. You had 145 so what should it be? Time to dig some more.

Hi, the normal Comp is 120-125 on 115hp at least from 82-87. The 90hp had a high Comp pistons.

So if you had a choice between a 79, 90hp or a 77 115 both in what appears to be in about the same shape but the 90 has trim the 115 not.
Which one? price very close but I get stuck with a 67 Glasstron hull with the 115.So many projects so little time

The weight is same, just you have a hand on the throttle. If you are rebuiling the boat build it to hold the power. Your cruising comfort will be much higher with the 140.

Looks like the power trim lines in the center of the splash well to me.

I am going to go pick up a 115 today, I had to buy the whole package boat/ trailer/ engine. And it is a Glasstron but have no need for the hull. Will post a couple pics later. The hull needs to go away soon.
