150xp vs 175xp
Hello everyone, I'm looking for some info. i currently have a 1984 Evinrude 150xp engine on my boat now. i have a friend that has a 1990 175xp for sale. My question is, will i be able to tell a noticeable difference power wise if i go with the 175? I don't know what year they went from crankshaft to prop shaft hp ratings. i know the 175 has been rebuilt recently. it also has the bubble back exhaust compared to the flat back exhaust mine has. I don't know what else is different about them. Any info is greatly appreciated.

The hull is a 1990 Nitro 175tf. 17.5 ft i have read it is around 1060 lbs with no engine, fuel or accessories. not sure of actual weight.

Big difference. The 150xp is a 149ci slightly warmed up version of the stock 150. It makes around 165 hp. The 175xp is a 235 with lower ports. It's 160ci and makes closer to 200 hp.

Yes, you will notice a difference. As mentioned, the 175 is larger displacement and I believe 1990 was about the last year of the crossflow design. I had a 1988 175hp that I bought new and kept 21 years. It was a fantastic engine. Never had to do anything to the block or lower unit except regular maintenance. I added some early model 235hp 2.6GT (XP) bolt-on parts which made a difference. Lots of info here on old crossflows if you do a search.

Great motor for sure. I had had a 19986 175 and did some minor clean up on the exhaust chest and cleaned up the exhaust ports and shaved .010 off the heads and picked up 14 mph....went from 64 to 78. It was the cheapest increase in speed I ever experienced. It allowed me to go from running a 24P chopper to a 28P. I could still run a 26P raker at 73mph with 6 people.
Here is some footage from 1987 ( sorry for the poor quality) showing how well it pulled running beside a tunnel hull with a 200 mariner with hydraulic jack plate. I just had a manual setback. The first run had 2 people in the tunnel and the guy said "I have 2 people in my boat". So I told his buddy to get in my boat. We were still faster (top end)
