For my photographer buddies
I want to start off with a disclaimer; I know this isn't as good as the equipment most of you have or started with but it's better than anything I have ever owned and maybe I'll hit it big like Greg and go somewhere with it!
Angie surprised me with a Canon EOS Rebel T5 --> http://www.samsclub.com/sams/rebel-t....ip?navAction=
I am not familiar with about 90% (OK 99%) of the features and terms, so I would greatly appreciate some suggestions and tips with how to get the best of my pictures. I want to get some filters and learn the ropes, maybe I can use that as an excuse to hit some of the meets and get to meet more of you folks.
Thanks

That's cool Scotty!!! I in no way can provide any advice on Photography. But there are a lot of members here that can I'm sure. You might also make contact with Kevin Kearny. You met him at Jasper 2014. He was the one taking all the pictures and was part of the Fuller's marine Group. He is a Great Guy with super Photography skills!!! And I'm sure he would be glad to give you some pointers. He's on here as Kevin_From_NJ or contact him from my FB page friends list.

You can't go wrong with an entry level DSLR. These packages are made cheaper by the quality of the lenses and filters they throw in. Don't let that distract you. Though its beginner, the quality of pictures will magnify quickly the more you play with it. In other words, that setup will probably do more than you can do with it...
The speed, the versatility of adjusting shutter speed (think film speed), light settings and on and on, are fun to play with. Back when I had my D50, I kept settings written down in my wallet for various situations. The camera did allow for programming (light from the back of the subject or hazy day shooting).
One piece of advice.... be careful, it can become addicting.
Ps.... Here are a couple of good articles that Greg wrote. I believe one was back in 2007 and the other in '13.

Article 2 - "TIPS FOR TAKING FANTASTIC PHOTOS AT BOATING EVENTS"

Hi Slimm, Congrats on the new camera. First thing to do is to take LOTS of pictures, even if they are of nothing. Just to get your self accustom to the camera and it's features. Youtube is an amazing teacher, I have never taken a photography class but I have watched hundreds of hours of youtube videos. Read up on/watch vids about aperture, shutter speed, iso. Learn what each one can do and how to use them together to create different effects. "TAKE NOTES" is a great piece of advice that has helped me a lot. Write down what has worked and what hasn't worked. The Auto and Scene modes are a good starting point but you will soon find out that in the Manual mode you can get a better photo. Sorry if this was all over the place, It is difficult for me to get what I am thinking down onto the keyboard. Dont hesitate to ask questions, and have fun.
Kevin
PS: Thank you Bud for the kind words.

Yep and I'm big on photography, just not any type "pro" but simple pictures for mems. But WATCH whats in the back ground! Watch sun angles, etc, and as with a digital, you can shoot, look, shoot again. I grew up with film so ya only had one chance. Put something else in the pic for perspective.
Watch what ELSE is in the pic too! Look the same pic. Original taken a friend. Not centered, car off the side too much road, etc. And then cropped.

And heres another pic that shows a little of everything to let the pic tell the story! "Fill the frame"! Some the bike telling I'm road tripping, bushes and some trees, the lake (Jackson Lake, Yellowstone) mountain's and some the mountain showers. Plus one heading to Oregon over the bridge from WA. Plus one here in the mountains near me.

First thing is to get some filters on the ends of your lenses to protect the lens , you can replace a filter but a scratched lens is not good . Spend a few bucks on a photography book that explains all the terminology . Take tons of pictures and have fun !

Learn to compose and frame your subject first, using AUTO and ignoring the other features. Then learn about exposure, aperture and depth of field, use A (aperture priority) to set the mood, and use ISO settings to keep your ****ter speeds within your blur-free comfort zone. Learn to use the fixed focus target and pre-focus (hold shutter button down halfway) while you lock focus on your subject and re-compose to get the end result. Then learn the Rule of Thirds for scenic composition, learn to pose people for portraits and where to put their shoulders... Then learn to chase approaching action with the zoom to keep it framed tightly. Invest in faster lenses when you get the hang of everything else..

Thank you all for the info. I appreciate it more than you may think. I have been kinda busy the last few days with Christmas being split between home and both our parents and trying to get the house in order. Angie is off work this week so I won't be on much, as soon as she is back to work I'll be blowing everyone up again!

I wish everyone a happy and SAFE new years celebration, however you choose to do it.
