    South Shore LI boating...

I live and have been keeping my boat in Port Washington for the last 3 years.
Starting to get kinda bored of boating in the western sound.
I grew up boating out of Lawrence and I'm considering keeping the boat for at least a good part of the season on the SS, possibly Lindenhurst.
Can anyone give me the pro's / con's of boating on the South Shore for me?
The main con is the driving time to the marina; 10mins vs 50+.
    I need some convincing....

Con is there are all those annoying 21-22 green motor sob's running around over there and very few gas guzzling 2 strokes. If you can tolerate them it's a great place to boat with lots of soup places. MERRYCHRISTMAS

I know nothing about Strong Island. How long is that drive in ride time with traffic snafus? Instead, I'd expand your circle to include the Thimble Islands East and all of New York Harbor West. Day trip over to Westport for a burger at the Black Duck. Longer Day trip up to West Point. There are some nice runs. Take a late morning cruise with the family Xmas Eve day down to NY Harbor for a look see. I'm assuming you have a single OB on the Pantera and it's not tucked away yet. It's supposed to be 70 degrees Thursday and you can race Santa around Manhattan!

I'm pretty sure his Pantera will have a single big block and probably winterized for the season. Just a guess but spring summer and fall they have very nice boating and a great group of guys. If I could afford to live there I might even boat with them.

Not sure why you missed Cherry Grove where the absolutely best looking woman are and go.....
The further you go East the cleaner the water has become due to the new breach between Bellport and Smith Point from Sandy ....
Plenty of nice places along the way all way to Claudio's!.......
Very important!!! Follow markers and charts carefully till you learn the area. You just can not run along the shore of Fire Island from spot to spot though......
Been running these waters for 20+ years and every year you come up on surprise....

    Bodhi-where you from seafood ?

As as to what everyone else is saying, south shore boating is amazing. You can find clusters of restaurants every few miles, you can have breakfast in Freeport, shoot to kismet for lunch and do dinner in ocean beach...head out to the hamptons ...and rumor is frank and dicks might be open again next summer. Basically, there is something different you can do every weekend.

It's not an OB, but a BBC built by JC Performance.

Thanks for the info. Running the western LIS on weekends is no fun. It's all confused wakes from boat traffic. I'd rather try some back water running and hit the ocean when needed.
I think hitting FI for lunch would be a nice change... or even running west to Pop's, and Freeport.
I'll mull this over, and if i do keep it on the SS, will check back in for the spots to go to, as i'm not familiar w/ much east of Freeport.
I grew up going to AJ's and Paddy's all the time... now long gone.

FYI, this is my ride... (for picture purposes only)

I was just thinking i would keep it high and dry at the anchorage in Lindenhurst, if i also keep my slip in Port Washington; taking the boat back and forth as I wanted. Otherwise, I would have to move the lift. Was considering doing this just for this year as a trial before committing.

Any other places for Hi/Dry besides Grovers that I am missing?
