i don't understand threads like this, boat is 25 years old, someone has been driving it all those years, may be wrong, but seems to me should have been just bolt on power and learn to drive.
ha the same experience with my first gambler, and my first allison, in both cases, boat was just fine, it was all in the driver..... me lol

you could be over trimming it making it go crazy.
    here's a tip.

when you have engine level... turn on the ignition key. the gauge pointer will be at neutral trim. use a sharpy and mark the gauge.
with a bullet.. you'll only need to trim to neutral or slightly above. at around 60 ish.. set the trim at that mark.. then ease into the throttle
and feel the boat. once you get the hang of controlling the chine walk.. you can "BUMP" the trim up.. but, not much.

1" to 1.5" below pad is plenty low for that boat. i wouldn't go any lower or the bow will go higher making the boat chine walk worse.

a txp o/t4 or even a trophy are good props to learn with... stick with the 4 blades. they drive better.

    Update:
Took this beast to Az with me in October, ran it on the Colorado River in the Parker strip (32 mile round trip from dam to dam) had a great time. I noticed that with just me in the boat it had a starboard list, I put 2 anchors in the storage behind the passenger seat, that leveled it out some, and with a full tank of gas I could hammer down with out any chine walk. Liking this boat a whole lot better now. Still blowing out on take off, tried to tuck motor all the way down on take off but it bog's down till I tilt it up, then I trim back down as the nose comes down. Took my dad out for a ride, scared the hell out of him when I nailed it the the nose went straight up, he thought we were going to sink. May have to look for a Trophy for it and get this Laser II of of it. Also took it(trailered) to what is the north end of Lake Havasu a place called Topock gorge(pronounced Toe-pock), just awesome! Go if you get a chance. Was sitting on the bank with the wife and could hear these V-8's coming up the river, must have been a 40' cat with with those long glass wind shields just hauling ass, sounded great echoing of the walls of the canyon.
