Although he did get a big ear Hopkins chopper 29 pitch with flames etched in it because he couldn't get over 87 with the 27 raker. He was running out of prop. Byron Bigfoot Harris a local boat mechanic that has raced just about everything with a prop since the 70s told him that might be too much prop for his set up. His response was I don't think he knows what he's talking about. I think he believes it's all that.

So, lets just beat this dead horse a bit more so Pete can poke at me some more.
A 27 raker, with a 1.86 (i think) case, at 87mph given a VERY conservative 10% slip puts him in the 7000+ RPM range which I'm pretty sure isn't happening unless he has unlimited packs, while possible, not probable. (See OMC guys, I DID learn something about ignitions, I think.) Nevermind the slew of other accidents waiting to happen strewn about in that equation.
If he were closer, I'd be MORE than happy to take him for a ride with a 27SRX and show him what 87 feels like.....I'd even provide him a digital video of his experience to relive whenever he so chose.1976 Hydrostream Viper - 2.5 EFI

He would annoy you into rescinding the offer ! 5-5500 is still a high rpm guesstimate which translates into what 70 ? He still swears by 87 mph on GPS. I had a 77 viper with a 1990 200 merc and my 17 foot liberator with a junior eaves 2.4 would smoke it. I thought I was knocking on 100 for sure. In those days it was the radar gun that slapped us full of reality , 81mph on 4 different passes. You can't b.s. someone who has been there. Chris Crochet around the amite river area humbled many a 100 mph boat when the handheld GPS became affordable in the late 90's.

We played with a viper with a 115 no nose cone. No clue on propshaft height, Bondo torqe tab 30p chopper II beef ran it on the rev limiter with single cable steering the whole lake ran 76 if I remmeber correctly. I'll try to find the video it was on the drain plug the whole time.

and BTW...some of these speeds quoted are comical, and that's being nice. Anything typical in this size range with an inline or V4 is a low to mid 70s boat at best; those hitting 80+ are truly exceptional. Certainly not everyone's boat is exceptional, unless they've been subscribing to today's "anyone who shows up gets a trophy" doctrine. A typical JP rig in the 70s or 80s was a 73-77 mph boat on the straightaways. 77 would win long course races in many instances.

The 1500XS (155 hp) had a small bullet lwp lower. Also, is a 15'' motor, it would touch 80. But I was more chicken with the trim button than some....Also measured with pitot speedo, so IDN actual certified speed. It was damn fast for 1978.....Fastest Viper combo at the time.

we played with a yt for a couple months it had a 150 fast strike 60* ran 86 with a 30et on or near rev limit. Jack did the core and floor over and the boat had minimal interior it was light.

I used to see him regularly when I was following the f2 or sst120's with a friend also from the Gonzalez La area. I haven't seen him in awhile. Got the Mirage fever looking at HB in the mid 90's and the evaluations y'all did and when I met his nephew in one it was over. I'm on #3.
I know it's been a while and been said but I learned tons about outboards from your columns. It was the first place you could learn something useful. MikeCheaters never Win !!!
