I spent most of my racing career trying to stay out of both salt and fresh water. Not always successfully. Fastest water I ever experienced was Lake Maggorie in St. Petersburg. That stuff looked like pea soup. I don't know what kind of water it was I just know I really did not want to end up in it. I wasn't worried about drowning since it was so shallow you could walk across it but that water looked nasty.

fresh or salt? did you taste it?

Gene - specific gravity is another way of expressing 'density'. Here's a post that tries to explain how density differences of salt vs. fresh water can affect different boat/setups.

Hi Rich---I have heard this story---but you are the only person I know that actually saw these boats??
Jock and I picked up two brand new boats 'at the factory'. As cash customers from Switzer in Chrystal Lake , IL. November, 1967. I think they were the last 18's built---
I was never aware of any weight difference---but----Jock insisted that the 1100's were a superior engine. He tried several combinations--including 1100 stackers. The boat never performed til he finally went to the larger displacement 1250's-----The boat actually performed best with the Chrysler 150 Stackers!!!

Great pictures Gene! It is very cool to see those boats in virgin condition. Saw a 20' in a warehouse once that had never been rigged but never saw an 18' like this. Both of those boats were part of my racing experience back then. You guys passed me more times than I can count in those days. Having one or sometimes two of those boats go by aired out and flying was something to see. There was no better vantage point than the cockpit of a kneel down E boat to see it from.

Gene - I haven't tested the effects on a WING setup in particular, but I wouldn't be surprised if it showed that the WING would be slightly slower (-1mph, top speed) in salt water. This is because the wing gets so much (~80+%) of it's support from aerodynamic lift, so reduced wetted surface would not be much of a factor for this setup - the additional drag on lower units would be the most significant contributor to fresh/salt water (density). (Of course, the performance during acceleration and in waves would be a different story, since more wetted surfaces).
p.s. - what did the 18' Wings weight, anyway?Last edited by Jimboat; 09-03-2015 at 01:04 PM. Reason: added a question...

Great pictures, An old friend was running the gold wing at Smith Mtn. Lake with the Chryslers when it picked up off water and came in sideways, destroying it. I think that was the 1968 marathon nationals.
