Easy way of changing tilt tube?

Changing out the tilt tube on the Merc 90 fishboat motor on my 17 foot Whaler. The outside of the tilt tube is well lubed so the tilt tube will slide out easily. Can I just use the new tilt tube to push out the old tilt tube as long as I keep the touching them whole time? I'm thinking that the new one will take on the load borne by the old one as they slide through, new-after old. I'm trying to avoid the PITA of having to drag out the hoist and hook it up... but I will if I have to.

You can position the engine vertical, put a piece of wood under the skeg and jack up the front of the boat to take some weight off the tilt tube, then push it through with the new tilt tube............. I have actually raised and lowered engine on transoms this way..........

I like this method of raising engine......will save me from pullin out the "cherry picker" engine lift! I know a jack plate is easer.....Thanks Gary

depends on how you apply them and how many beers are left in the case................... Usually with me, when there's one beer left, things go quite well...... just like Pink Floyd...................... But seriously, common sense, being careful and going slow does the trick for me...............
