Cougar MTR 21 Evinrude 300xp Prop question suggestion?
Hello everyone! I am new on S&F hope I am posting at the right place...
I recently bought a 1987 Cougar MTR 21 Tunnel hull with a 1989 Evinrude 300xp. I didn't had a chance to try it yet but the guy who sold it to me said it does 88 mph with the Cleaver 32'' on radar. Now my question is, would anyone recommand to try a Chopper prop or a cleaver 4 blades something like that? I would like to reach 95 mph. I can get a Hoss Triton I 29'' wich was on an Eliminator 21 Daytona with the exact same setup.
Foot as nose cone motor is mount on Hydrolic Jack plate etc. I have been told the Hoss Triton I will give me better cruiing quality then the Cleaver and would be more effective overall with about the same speed maybe 2-3 mph gain.
What you guys think?
Also I would like to know what kind of small modification ( not to expensive ) I can do on my 300xp to crank it up a little bit while keeping it reliable...
This is a 4.0L but I think it has 3.6L cylinder heads on it that should make around 330 hp I believe ( motor run REALLY Strong and crispy )
Thanks to everyone who wants to help me out with this!

I would try a Chopper or Lightning ET, 21's seem to work best with bow lifting props. The only ones that worked good with Cleavers were ones run at sea level.

Thanks Dave,
I think you are right the Cleaver's doesn't have much natural bow lifting as stock you have to modify them a lot. The Hoss Triton 1 is really similar to a chopper but has larger blades ( we call them Elephant ears ) So I might this one and compare with the cleaver.
Also have you ever tried the Bravo 1 XS prop for outborad? I was looking at this prop the other day seems to be very efficient. I want a high spped prop and also a good daily driving prop. My Raker is in bad shape it has been repaired several times I need to change it.
Thanks again

Have not tried the Bravo 1's on my boat but it way smaller and lighter than a 21. Merc's Lightning ET is by far the best prop I have ever tried on my hull, most guys with 21's also liked them. These were all Merc powered so with the V-8 it might not be the best prop, but keep trying untill you find the magic one. You never know if you don't try.

Hoss triton 1 will work well. I rigged a 21 MTR with a 3.0 with fingerports and cut down 2.7 heads 285hp with a hoss 30" did 98mph with 2 people,so you should be able to see 100mph. Fingerports and proper porting will wake them up big time.

I have a 21 MTR and the bravo1xs was a great runner, It was a little small for my HP. I am going to start lookin for a 15.25 x 28 or 30" I also run a merc 3 blade cleaver 15x30, and that runs 104 , has a bit of trouble getting on plane with alot of weight.

When the 21 MTR were fully rigged at the factory they came at one time with ETs on them, at least that's what I'm told. My 21MTR/Merc 280 likes the 30 ETs and my fastest prop is a 32 X 14 3/4 Hoss. My boat is setup very light and doesn't like my 30 cleaver unless I put a heavy passenger behind me to settle the backend down.

Hey y'all Cougar owners. So, I've posted this before, but I'm still scratchin my head. I'm running a 21 mtr with a 300xs. I'm getting more seat-time, but I still can only get the engine up to 5400 rpm. That's on a MercMonitor digital guage, so there's a good chance it is correct rpm readings. I don't have my gps feed set up yet, so I don't know for sure what I'm running. Its enough that my face is warbling, but I'm still close to 1000 rpm short. I'm running a 3 blade lightning 32 pitch, in flawless condition. I'm starting to wonder if its too much pitch, but then I would never make up 1000 rpm going down 2 or 3 inches anyway. Any ideas? ?

Yes, exactly. I'm guessing I'm running around 80 mph, and I can't get the extra rpm out. I've tried all different engine heights, trim. It's hard to believe that 1000 rpm can be tweaked out by those adjustments, but maybe. I was wondering if maybe my hotfoot is not giving me full throttle or something.

Oh yea those hot foots do have a throttle stop, you need to have someone check that or check it your self. I was going to say less than 80 but not sure of gear,I have seen boats go 150+ at 5600 with a tall gear and huge prop.

Did you get the movement stopped that was giving you problems last year? Sounded WAY Dangerous to me! My fast prop is a 15x30 Merc Cleaver at 104mph (so far) I just bought a new 15.25x28 Bravo1 for sking, and had a 15.25 x24 last year that was way to small. My 28 is running about 61 to 62. I know i can run a little bigger, but wanted better out of the hole runt when the skiers are behind me. Good luck.

I'm pretty sure that the side to side is/was just me jacking the motor too high and/or trimming out too far. You are only seeing 61 mph with the Bravo One? I have a 30 B1 on my Checkmate that I was going to swap out and try. Will keep trying.
