2.5L EFI Rebuild LOOK!!!
Hey Guys,
If there is anyone thinking about rebuilding their motors, especially a 2.5 260, you have to give Jay Smith a call at JSRE. I have nothing but good things to say about Jay and Cathy. They were extremely helpful and had good communication throughout the whole process. Don't think it's going to cost you a fortune either, Jay is very reasonable and the result is bar none the best out there!!!!
I took my motor to 3 other mechanics prior to sending my motor to Jay and obviously they had no idea where to begin. I urge anyone thinking about a rebuild or just in need of professional advice, to give Jay a call. You will save yourself more time and money in the long run, Jay is so knowledgeable with an incredible sense of service and craftsmanship that I am recommending all of my friends and family.
If there is anyone in Arizona that would like to take a look at Jay's work in person, you can contact me and I would be more than happy to show you his meticulous work.
Garrett

What was the condition of your engine before it was sent for rebuild and what was done to it, and how much did it cost for what was done?

I purchased an Allison XB2003 from a guy locally here in Arizona. Not knowing much about boats or engines, I thought I would take it for a test drive to see how she would run. So we took the boat out to Lake Pleasant for about 15-20minutes and I thought everything was fine. The next time I took the boat out by myself the engine was overheated and had to have to water pump replaced. The following few times the engine began to run rough, but I wasn't sure what was wrong. So I did some research and came across some great reviews of Jay winning numerous awards for racing and his amazing knowledge of Merc engines, especially racing engines. So I gave him a call and when he received this engine he said it was a complete mess. The guy had put on the wrong fuel rail from a 2.4 instead of a 2.5. The upper end cap was the wrong one and had too much play and the wiring was a complete mess. So he basically rebuilt the entire motor to make sure everything was perfect. I am very pleased with the engine and the cost was nominal, of course depending on what needs to be done. The exact figures would have to be discussed with Jay because he would be able to comment more on the value of services to the monetary dollar value. Put it this way, comparing to buying a used engine in decent condition it was probably half the cost. Thanks again Jay.

not to step on anyones toes ,but i could not afford to have my boat if i had to rely on a professional to do service or rebuild my motors , with the machining of friend jim ruck , i do all my own rebuilds and service on all the toys i can afford. so hats off to who can afford to have guys like jay help out.

To whom it may concern:
I charge $950.00 labor to rebuild a V-6 Mercury motor ( mods and parts NOT included, and ya gotta buy parts anyway ) my thoughts are if you can get one built cheaper, as good as or better than I can do one , go for it !
I'm covered up with engines and machine work so my feelings certainly won't be hurt ..

With that said, I would say it's worth the money. Jay has plenty of other engines to be worked on, but I have heard of others price shopping only to be disappointed later and end up going to Jay in the end. I say just get it done right the first time so you won't have to worry about it.

IMO, Customer service is just as important as the quality of the work. And I dont see how anyone could have better customer service or quality workmanship than Jay Smith. I know of no mercury dealer or outboard mechanic shop around here that only charges $950 labor to rebuild a merc v6. And for damn sure wont treat you to a meal and invite you to watch your engine being put back together like Jay does.

As I have said before Jay and Cathy are some of the finest people that you will ever deal with and Jay will also spend lots of time with his customers before and after the sale answering questions to help you with performance to get the most out of your boat...Just a great guy to do business with....THANKS, Jay and Cathy for all that you do. very nice. I have only heard good things about Jay and his attention to detail. I'm sure there are others out there that are just as commited to quality work, but from what I have read Jay really does try to go above and beyond to make sure his customers are pleased.
Note - I have never met Jay, nor do I own a merc. My experiance is purely based on what what I have seen here and the 2 times I have called him with merc related questions.Change is a good thing.
