Good for you Mikey. Its been a very good career for me. Unfortunatly our governor is making things tough on our pension so Im gonna get out before he tries to screw me. If you get on you can give me a police escort on the Sunrise parkway so I dont get pulled over for my trailer. i would be up there alot if the ride on the LIE wasnt so bad.
PS Most my career was in correction so we didnt eat donuts. Pork roll egg and cheese on homemade rolls right out of our kitchen was more the usual, thought the local cops were always bringing donuts into Booking.

Becoming a police officer around here is like hitting lotto, Your chances of getting in are very slim because of the amount of people who apply, but it is most definately worth the chance!

How do they decide? Do you take a test given by the State of New York or the county? In New Jersey you either take the Civil Service test or some of the police depts have a Chief of Police test which is something done by each individual department. Obviously in the Chief of Police test if you know someone and have the college your in. Civil Service is a little more fair however since Operation Desert Storm and Freedom there are alot more people that have achieved Veterans status so that makes it a little more difficult if your not a Vet.

down here on the island the two counties each administer their own "police test". highest scores obviously get called first for screening and then u go through the psych and into the academy. its hard to get in with even a 95 or 97 on the test because so many people are given points for military service and for being a racial minority. i am friends with two brothers that are the nephews of a captain and that helped alot but they still had a hard time getting in. seems to be alot easier in other states. i was planning on taking the test but i would rather go boating. hopefully ill be out of college and holding a decent job by the time i would even get called. hopefully not a dumb decision not taking the test

No points for minoritys in Jersey however they rank disabled vets first reguarless of passing score than vets than everyone else. State Corrections has the largest turnover since they have the most officers so I tell the people who want into my jail to take the civil service test, get into the state corrections and than 18 months after your out of the academy I will have you transfered into my county jail. The pay is better, you dont have to travel (you do have to live in the county) and its much safer. In my opinion.

That will jsut make me bang the test out even faster, last time around I was home by about 11 am, that puts me up at the romp by 3:30-4 which is enough time to still go rompin on saturday lol
Vnemous- NYPD gives extra points for speaking foreing languages, living in the 5 boroughs, different ethnic backrounds etc etc.. NYPD calls almost everybody for an interview which is promising. Id rather drive peterbilts for the rest of my life, but 25 year retirement looks pretty promising!

Yeah NJ gives a $1500 stipen for BiLingual Officers but its a seperate test. NYPD a tough job. I spent quite a bit of time at Rikers with thier tactical unit back in the 90's. Did a lot of training on that island were there use to be a all girls college and they bury the citys unclaimed there.
