I have mine insured through State Farm.....$7K hull/motor appraised/agreed value. I can't rememeber exactly but I'm thinking my premiums are around $150/yr. Keep in mind that my location plays into the rates since I can only use the boat 1/2 the year. BUT, keep in mind that if you plan on hanging more than max rated 120hp off the back, you'll be hard pressed to find a company that will knowingly and willing insure an overpowered hull. If you do hang a larger than rated HP, and choose to...say for the sake of argument, tell the insurer that you only have a 120hp motor on the boat....you will be faced with several, potentially catastrophic dilemas:
#1. Should you have an accident and the agent realizes that you have exceeded the HP rating for the boat you will most likely be denied a payout.
#2. Should you have an accident involving another craft, and the above mentioned criteria applies, you will most likely be responsible for damages/medical treatment of other persons/crafts out of your pocket.
If you have a 120HP or under on the boat right now, I can't imagine you will have any problem at all finding a company to insure the boat affordably. something else you may want to consider is that since these boats aren't exactly plentiful in pristine shape anymore, you should have the boat appraised for its real value and not resale, because a 1977 boat, on paper is'nt worth a whole heck of alot to an insurance company.

Had my 1978 V-King insured thru Progressive. Policy was for an agreed value of $15,00.00 for Boat, Motor and Trailer with towing. Premium was around $400.00 per year.

When I insured my Jon ($5K coverage for the package @ $64 a year) through my State Farm agent I asked about hot rod boats. She told me it didn't matter what I hung off it, they'd cover it. I said wait, hang on a min, so if I hung a 260 off the back of this Jon boat you'd cover it? You bet was the response. Not sure what that would have cost..... Mom and Dad have had insurance with this agent for 35 years and me for 15 so not sure if that matters or not...... I've had nothing but good luck with SF so there's my pick and $0.08
