What is the difference in a 225 ProMax and a 225 X ?
Is one better than the other?

Both engines are standard efi. the 225x has the down draft intake with a single throttle shutter like the opti, also has an alternator like the opti but doesnt have the air compressor. The 225 promax has the traditional ignition system(stator, trigger, switchbox, ect.) The 225x hasthe new style ignition(crank position sensor, new style ecm, and cdm's). The promax has head gaskets and the x has o-ring heads. Hope this helps.

any noticable power difference between the two? I was thinking about making a cross of an X and a promax using the parts I have laying around(use an opti intake, old style ignition and fuel), any one tried this?

I believe with both bone stock, that the X motor is a little stronger. I think the 225X motors actually put out close to 245hp right out of the box. However, if you're looking for one to hop up some, the ProMax is the better choice. Much easier and cheaper to squeeze more hp out of the ProMax than the X motor.

What is the real horsepower of a 225 promax?

My boat was originally rigged with a pair of 2000 225 Pro Max's. I rerigged a couple of years ago to 225 X's that are 2005's.
A big change between the two that was not mentioned is the Pro Max's oil injection is driven by a nylon gear and considered the weak link in the motor. The 'X' has a much improved single point oil injection system. The 'X' is also controlled by a Smartcraft ECU.
My take on the two. The older motors had more punch on the top end and seemed to rev up to higher rpm's easier. They seemed more raw and untamed.
The newer motors start easier and idle better. They seemed to be dialed back just a tad and definately more computer controlled. I never head the rev limiter kick in on the old motors. The new ones are right there at 6800-6850.
As for the oil injection being the weak link. I put 450 hours on my old motors. Never touched the oil injection and never had an issue with them. They still ran perfect.
As for the new ones, just blew a powerhead. It had 210 hours on it.Last edited by Powerplay25; 10-11-2010 at 09:59 PM.

As far as horsepower. Both of my Pro Max X's were run on a dyno and put out 245 HP at the prop shaft.

K...bone stock, I believe the ProMax X motors are stronger compared to standard ProMax motors. However, it is much easier and cheaper to get more horsepower out of the standard ProMax motors than it is the ProMax X motors.
