Charlie,
I was told the Hi Per rod was heat treated on the top area but I'd have to flag
on that , I have used the Pro Max style rods ( after the caps were clearenced and SPS rod bolts attached ) in some VERY modified engines with zero issues..
Just my observations...

Do it all the time with the cap altered for the SPS or ARP using the 3/8th inch 12 point rod bolt..BUT I do not suggest the "saw cut" type top of the small end of the rod for oiling they are weak on the top..

Mercury SPS part number is 10-848475 for the 41 rod and 10-91995 for the 5250 rod.. VERY EXPENSIVE like $20.00 a bolt also Pro Marine is selling some nice ARP rod bolt cheaper and they are as strong as the SPS I'm told..

I bought several sets of the ARP bolts from Pro Marine John, I hear they are at a 300,000 tensel strength to break verses the SPS 243,000 ...I hear even Mercury Hi Per rods are coming with ARP rod bolts to replace the SRS ones.. I tore down an 2005 F1 engine last week with 5250 rods and they were fitted with the ARP bolts..

That's good to know. If they work thats great, they have to be way cheaper. $20.00 a bolt is laughable.

ARP bolts are in a couple of my motors. No big holes in them yet, and I've tried.
