Meh. I have an '09 Jetta TDI in my driveway right now on a 24hr test drive... they're gonna be disappointed when I take it back and leave it there.
First, they must be doing something special to get those reported MPG. Not saying it gets bad MPG, but last 55 miles I drove comb city/rural 45 mph roads I avg. 29.4 MPG... not bad, but a far cry from the high 30's reported. Plus, unless you have your foot in the diesel injectors, high rpm's the thing is a 4440lb tank. Sluggish to say the least, but the DSG transmission is absolutely awesome... shifts smoothly up/down but seems to be constantly shifting trying to keep the car at a constant speed or with any hint of acceleration. Add that with a 26K price tag that doesn't come with memory seats, xenon lights, nav, or other creature comforts that a lot of cars in that range have I'm gonna pass. If you drive like gramps on the highway and so mostly hwy driving striving for ~50MPG this car is probably for you. If you are like me, impatient, and want to go somewhere when u depress the gas pedal you may want to look elsewhere.
Been car shopping for a bit now, next up is a gently used '07/'08 BMW 335i for a test drive.2005 Checkmate Pulsare BR 225 Merc - bright friggen red!

Any diesel engine will take awhile to break in before it gets to it's most efficient running. A new one off of the lot is not a good mpg representative. Do some research and see what people are actually getting.
Also, it sure isn't a 4400 lb car. Try about 3200 lbs.'86 Valero YT, 2.5 200

If you're getting those mile and if the car doesn't get up and go when you mash the peddle there is something wrong with it. The car typically averages 44mpg.
Anyone who pays $26k for that car in today's economy needs their head examined. I called a local dealer and offered $21K on a car they had in the lot. I said "I'm buying a car today, it can be from you or someone else. $21K is my offer" He said "give me 10 minutes" Called back in 5 and said "deal". Did it all over the phone, showed up after work and drove away with the car. My car also has a DSG.
Also had an 02 (maybe on 01 can't remember but it was the 90hp model) TDI, averaged 50+ on the highway but that car was horribly slow. Don't know how they're getting over 50 in an 09 though.

I stand corrected on the weight, but returned the car today, it still "sucked" to me....
The hunt continues.
horsepower- how's the C55 search going??? Never heard back from ya. Or see what you can get an '07 BMW 335i with under 40K miles for.

Man I had a Jetta rental with the 2.5 gas motor, and that sucker would get down. I thought it would have been a great daily driver, my impression of it was more favorable then the camry I just had while my truck was in the shop.
I think those diesels take a while to break in, the Duramax folks were fussing about bad mileage too. And if the car is new, the ECU probably has it in break in mode anyway, so you aren't getting all its got.
Give it about 1500 miles and watch it perk up.

Why are you trying to compare a BMW or Benz to a Jetta
Damn man, its a $20K car and not even close to being in the same class
My 09 TDI is a POS compared to my LX470 but I'd never try and compare the 2. Compare a TDI to a Corolla or a Civic or a Fusion and it does pretty well.
