What epoxy to easily blend in nose cose ??
I'm redoing the nose cone on my lower unit. The previous owner only epoxy'd it on....and I just really didn't trust it...it was starting to crack. I broke the nose cone off (came off pretty easy), and had a shop weld it back on.
I'm assuming that I need to use epoxy instead of a body filler to blend the cone back into the LU. What is a good epoxy to use that will stand up over time, but will also be easy to sand and shape? I've tried using stuff like JB Weld in the past, and that stuff is almost impossible to sand.
I would like to get it locally if possible...I don't want to have to order something and then wait a week to get it. I want to start working on it this weekend.
ThanksIan

West systems epoxy with filler like 404 is a good bet. I personally would use body filler. If the you give a rough surface to bite it works very well. Feather edge the cone so there is no edge where the filler meets the cone piece.

Use PC-7. You can get it at most hardware stores etc.. It is very durable and sands O.K.. If you want it to be durable it won't be easy to sand, those 2 things are mutually exclusive.

I used West System G-Flex for most of the filling when i put mine on, then went to Formula 27 for the fine detail... G-Flex is pretty hard and tough to sand, Formula 27 is soft and easy to work with but is easy to chip if you hit even small sticks and giant clumps of weeds.

I have used body filler in the past, and even if I rough up the case with 60 grit paper, it still ends up getting pulled off after a few 80mph runs. Last summer I was repairing missing chunks of filler in my LU after every trip to the lake. I finally got sick of it, and decided to do it right.Ian

I'll second the PC-7. I think the brand is PC. ACE hardware usually has it. Not sure about the other big box stores.

Yes, Home Depot should have it. I'm heading there right now to pick some PC-7 up.
After I get the epoxy all smoothed out...what about paint? What grit should I finish the epoxy with? Then should I go over that with an epoxy primer then paint.....or just go with paint straight over the epoxy? Base coat then clear on top....or just single stage paint??
I've repainted this LU so many times...I want this to be the last time for a while.Ian

MAS 2 part epoxy with micro beads 14,000 psi tensile strength use a fast reducer. I've hit rocks with the stuff with almost no damage.
For paint I use the ceramic hi temp engine paint. Not a single chip or blister and I beat the livin crap outa the boat just about every weekend........................................................................LETS STORM THE CASTLE BOYS!

Well I went out and bought some of the PC-7 this weekend and blended the cone on my case. Man, that stuff is great!! It has the consistancy of body filler, but just a little "firmer". Spreads on great......haven't tried sanding it yet, hopefully it sands easy.
Thanks for the info guys!Ian
